Problems with Google WiFi Pro being slow

J_West

I recently upgraded my old Google Wifi to the Wifi Pro in anticipation of getting connected on fiber and a much faster internet connection. Today my fiber was installed, and let's just say I am very much less than satisfied with the speeds through the Google WiFi. I have tried multiple different configurations, but the fastest I have been able to pull (ookla speed test) was around 800mbps at the router node, and less than that at the PC connected to another node. I moved the PC and hardwired it to the Google Wifi and still was only pulling between 700-800mbps. I tried connecting to a different router and to directly to the modem and both ways I was pulling 1700-2100mbps and was getting 3000-4000mbps upload (best even on Google was 800ish).

I have enabled WAP3. I have tried to use the 160MHz. No matter what I do I cannot seem to get more than a gig through the Google WiFi, even when everything is on lan. Is there anything I can do to get faster speeds?

Hi I have the same issue since October 2022 and seems like there is not a soon solution for this topic(if there is one)  Google Nest Wifi Pro is throttling the internet provider speed….I have 500 Mbps and only get 200 Mbps…

Well, I feel like and idiot now. After more research I think I have it figured out. Google seems to have cheaped out on the Pro and it only has 1gig lan instead of a 2.5 or 5, so it will be physically impossible to get faster speeds. Looks like I am returning mine tomorrow. The TP Link Deco is around the same price and at least has a 2500 lan. Next steps up would be the Liksys Atlas Max Axe8400 with a 5 gig lan (but more than double the price) or even more expensive is the Netgear Orbi 960 with true 10 gig lan ports.

Well, I finally found a solution for my problems with internet speeds issues with Google Nest WiFi Pro:

As in the WiFi pro is not posible to set the band and protocol in which it Is desired to work, i.e Transmit In 5 GHz, 802.11 ax/ 6e, and instead it depends In the transmission  information of each device to provide band and protocol, if you set In the device that  Is going to be connected with the WiFi Pro router, the band and protocol you want to work with, the device will be connected with these parameters to the WiFi Pro router.  To do that, at least in Windows 11, with Intel WiFi devices you can select in the drivers properties through the  control panel ,the transmission protocol you want to work with.  So to get higher transmission rates, you have to select the protocol and band available by your adapter that allow the higher Mbps transmission rate possible.

So I selected the band 5 GHz and Protocol 802.11ax (or 6e) AND now I get the 500 Mbps provided by the ISP.

So, If Intel drivers would set by default the protocol that allow the higher transmission rates, the Internet speeds won't be throttled.

However, I had to do some changes In the Windows registry as the Intel WiFi drivers properties had two transmission properties options. I deleted the options with older protocols  ( 802.11a,802.11b,802.11g) and left only the ones with higher speeds (802.11n, 802.11 ac and 802.11ax/6e) AND selected 5Ghz 802.11ax/6e to navigate at the máximum speeds possible.

Hope this helps to solve the speed issues for Windows 11 users that have Intel WiFi adapters 🙂

I was able to get a solution. It was as simple as returning my 4 Google WiFi Pro nodes to the store and purchasing a much better mesh WiFi system for the same price. Until Google decides to keep up with the competition or (what I had hoped they were doing) go above and beyond, then I will not be using Google WiFi again. I love the integration and ease of the app and controls, but the hardware is several years behind and there is no way to fix that other than to get with the times.

Hi AbigailF,

I found a solution after 5 months of use but I would return the Google Nest wifi pro if I could.

I thougth Google was offering a modern Wifi device but the lack of options that the device has to set up the device  in both transmition protocols and security( like lack of customizable firewall) is very disappointing. I wish a firmware uptade could change that, but seems like iti is impossible.

Anyway the pair I bougth are working but I expected more from Google devices...
