Stability Issues after running for a few days - Google Nest Wifi Pro

adamlarson23

I have a 400 Mbps Down, and 20 Mbps Up connection. After about 2 - 3 days, my connection will drop to about 8Mbps Down and 0.1Mpbs Up. This is plugged directly into a switch that is connected to the router, so no wifi usage. If I unplug the router and plug it back in i'll get a few hours of full performance, but it will slow degrade throughout the day. I've gotten into the habit of just rebooting it every couple days before I start work, which is frustrating. I've thought about automating the power down/power up to happen during the middle of the night.

Today i'm attempting to cool it with a fan, as i've noticed it gets incredibly hot. To be fair I have about 50 - 100 Wifi devices connected at any given time, with most of them being home smart devices, so very little traffic is be served.

I've read through the forums, and seen quite a few similar problems, with no real solutions, is there something I missed other than me automating the power cycling and cooling i'm doing?

Thanks,

Adam

24 hours after cooling manually with a fan, and it is much cooler to the touch.

But performance has already degraded. I'm down to 46 Mbps down, and 14 Mbps up. Very small sample of data, but it at least appears heat isn't the cause like I was hoping. I'll soon have to reboot once performance degrades further.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for reaching out and I'm sorry for this experience, @adamlarson23. If you haven't already, please give the steps below a try to see if there are any improvements with the performance of your Google Nest Wifi Pro:

  • If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  • Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  • Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  • Turn off IPv6.
  • Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary server and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  • Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  • If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will remove all network data.

@Beelzabob, kindly give me an update if there's a boost in internet speed on your end after turning off the Preferred Activities.

Looking forward to your response.

Best,
Lovely

Having the same issue here.

I went with the 3-Pack of Nest Wifi Pro for my 1200 sqft Townhouse. I also have Cat5 and Cat6 lines run to major internet hogs (TVs, Desktop Computers, Game Systems). For the internet, I have a 1 gigabyte Fiber Line that goes right from the modem to Google's router.

I've worked with the ISP and have concluded that their signal remains strong and hasn't seen any drops and that the problem is with the router.

When I first installed it, it ran great with no problems for several months. (This was back in November '22) After that in January/February, it occasionally seems to 'clog up' and needed a reboot. Speeds would drop, or points would drop from the mesh, after a reboot through the Google Home app everything started working again.

Starting in March, this has become much more frequent. First it was requiring a reboot every week but now it seems to require one ever couple days (or some days needs a couple reboots).

What happens is everything starts crawling to a slow pace. When I do a browser speed check where normally it would show at least 800MB down / 650MB up, it would tank to about 7-10MB down / 2MB up.  This is on all devices hardwired and WIFI. When this happens I then try to run the speed test directly on the router (through Google Home App) which just returns failures, please try again. Once this happens I reboot the router (again through Google Home App) and once it comes back up, everything is running great again and all speed tests show acceptable speeds once more.

Considering the number of posts I've seen about this, it looks like there is just something wrong with the devices which I'm hoping some firmware updates will correct. I've seen someone in a different thread mentioned having success turning off 'Preferred Activities' in the settings. So I'm going to try running without this for a while to see if that has any effect.

Okay I am just following back up here.

After turning off the 'Preferred Activities' in the Google Home App, Wi-Fi settings, I have yet to have the issues I've been having. So it seems like the issue really is centered around this setting for me.

So for everyone else having the issue, try turning this off and see if that helps solve it.

I've tried everything at this point (except messing with preferred activities), and still consistently have this problem. I'm starting a new test with that off now, hoping this helps, because thus far my experience isn't great, and far below that of the Nest Wifi I had before.

Its fascinating but thus far turning off Preferred Activities, the problem hasn't been happening. This is the most stable its been in months of time.
