Wired second router weak signal

Hi

I have a Nest Wifi Mesh working fine in my main house but am having issues with the setup in my office at the end of my garden around 30m away.  I have an ethernet cable from the my main router connected to a second router in the office but for some reason the signal is weak. I know the ethernet is working properly as if I connect it directly to my Mac in the Office I get a 300Mbps connection. I also know the second router is working OK as it connects fine to the mesh in the main house.

My main router has IPV6 disables and the DNS entries as 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4

Any help appreciated

Steve

Actually it seems that even though the second router shows in the home app as having a wired connection it was actually getting a very weak connection to the house WiFi

Hi prices1964,

It sounds like you're experiencing a challenging situation with your Nest Wifi mesh network reaching your office at the end of your garden. While you have a wired connection, the signal strength seems weak. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and improve the situation:

1. Optimize Router Placement:

  • Position the office router: Ensure the office router is placed in a central location within your office space, away from walls and obstructions. Line-of-sight between the Nest Wifi points is crucial for optimal signal strength.
  • Check for interference: Identify and minimize potential sources of interference, such as cordless phones, microwaves, or other wireless devices, operating on the same frequencies as your Wi-Fi network.

2. Investigate Ethernet Connection:

  • Cable quality: While you tested the cable with your Mac, double-check for any damage or imperfections in the ethernet cable connecting the main router to the office router. Consider replacing it with a high-quality Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable.
  • Port configuration: Ensure both the port on your main router and the port on the office router are configured for LAN access. Sometimes ports can be set to WAN mode by default, which wouldn't provide the necessary connectivity.

3. Consider Advanced Settings:

  • Channel selection: Experiment with different Wi-Fi channels on both the main and office routers. You can utilize Wi-Fi analyzer apps to identify less congested channels in your area.
  • Wireless power adjustment: If your Nest Wifi and office router allow it, try adjusting the transmit power (if available) on the office router. Increasing the power slightly might improve coverage, but be mindful of regulations and potential interference with other networks.

4. If you're using a modem/router combo, you can choose to set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues. If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will delete all network data.

You may skip any step that you’ve done already.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Dan
