Subject: Request for Culturally Diverse African-American Voice Options

Feedback:

The current voice options for Google Home and Assistant do not reflect the racial diversity of America. At present, all available voices are indicative of Caucasian accents and "Standard American English," which ignores the authentic vocal patterns and identity of African-American users.

As Google transitions fully to the Gemini for Home system, I am requesting that the March 2026 update include permanent, non-celebrity voice options that authentically represent African-American English-speaking accents. Diversity should be a foundational part of this new app rollout, ensuring the technology finally feels inclusive of the community it serves.

I appreciate you bringing this up. Having a voice that reflects your culture is essential for making these tools feel inclusive, not just functional.

With the Gemini for Home rollout underway, now is the ideal time for this input. I will be sharing your request with our product teams for consideration. To add even more weight to this, you can dictate your feedback directly to your speaker or mobile by saying, 'Hey Google, send feedback.'

How “authentic” are we talking here? Do you want a vocal style that’s like Flava Flav, or are you thinking Kerry Washington? Because both are equally authentic because they’re both black people. There are a lot of different ways to sound black, I think when you start looking for this kind of specificity, things can get out of hand very quickly.

the voice options currently available are examples of non-regional accents. They’re all distinguishable and unique, but there are no obvious cues to indicate where they originate from. This is so that they appeal to the most amount of people possible and can be easily understood without needing to spend any time decoding or reviewing.
I disagree with you that all the current voices sound white. After a cursory browse of available voices, Cyan and Purple sound like black women speaking English with a non-regional accent.
