Audio plays on wrong speaker

David_H
Community Member

Audio for routines is playing out of the incorrect speaker despite the correct speaker being selected in the routine setup.

I've got a nest hub in the kitchen and a nest mini in a bedroom. I have a weekday routine that runs at 8:45 every morning. It was working fine. I took some time off so I turned the routine off so that it wouldn't wake me up.

I reactivated the routine, and the audio is now coming out of the kitchen speaker when it should come out of the bedroom speaker.

In the option for "run this routine on," the bedroom speaker is selected. I figured I would jiggle the handle a little bit, so I edited the routine: selected the kitchen speaker then saved the routine; then I went back into the routine and changed it back to the bedroom speaker.

Audio is still playing out of the kitchen speaker.

I know that the bedroom speaker is set up correctly because it responds to commands, and if I choose the broadcast option and broadcast to the entire house audio comes out of both speakers as expected.

I also tried creating a speaker group. I placed both the kitchen speaker and the bedroom speaker in the group. I assigned the group to the routine. When the routine runs, audio comes out of the kitchen only.

Things that aren't a solution: I saw an older post that mentioned a somewhat similar situation, and that user fixed it by creating a custom routine for this rather than using a built-in routine. If there is a bug in the built-in routines that is causing audio to play on the wrong speaker, we should be able to delete the routine. But built-in routines can't be deleted despite users not actually using them.

I would appreciate any assistance or ideas you folks have. Thanks!

Hey David_H,

Sorry to hear about your experience with your Google Home/Nest devices, but thanks for bringing this up. To confirm, does the same thing happen when you play music via voice command? Please check if you have assigned the default speaker on the Google Home app. Follow the steps below to know-how:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. In Home View > tap the device card on a speaker or display to set the default media playback device for.
  3. In the top right, tap Settings > Audio.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hey David_H,

I just wanted to follow up on this. Are you able to check if there's a default speaker assigned on the Google Home app?

Looking forward to your response.

Hi Muddi,

Sorry for the thread hijack, but David's clearly lost his phone.

Any luck resolving this issue or any tips to force speaker on routine? The same thing is happening to me, a routine is playing in my daughter's room despite the "device for audio" setting at the bottom of the routine setup clearing designating my son's speaker.

It's pretty frustrating that these settings don't work...I've deleted the routine multiple times to no avail.

Cheers Paul

Hi Dizzie_D,

Thanks for posting.

Since you tried to delete and re-create the routine, could you tell us if you have tried to completely reset the Google Nest speakers? We'd love to know more details on how these routines work before so we can further isolate the issue.

Best,

Princess
