Can no longer cast to speakers

Anca0608

I no longer can cast any audio to my speakers. It shows it's casting and connected and the media appears to play but no sound comes from the speakers. I've unplugged the speakers and wifi and even restarted my phone. Just last week I was able to cast, but now nothing. I even tried to give google play permission to my microphone, as a Google search suggested, but I have no such option in my settings. Super frustrating as I rely on these speakers to listen to music and audiobooks.

Hi Anca0608,

This is not the experience we want you to have, let me help you. A few questions: which Nest speakers are we working with? When did your issue begin? Were there any recent changes made? What casting apps are not working?

It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router, followed by your Nest speakers.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

Once done, try to cast again and also try to give a voice command if it works. If the issue persists, let’s do a factory reset on your Nest speaker to revert it back to its original settings. You can start fresh by setting it up again. Here’s how.

Keep me posted.

Best,

Dan

Hi,

I tried all the options you mentioned and I still cannot cast any audio to my speakers. I have one 1st generation Google Home Mini and two 2nd generation Google Nest Minis. I reset the Google Nest Mini and nothing worked. When I try to cast it says "NOTE: This device is not optimized for casting, so your experience may very." and I cannot cast anything from YouTube that has sound or Spotify or from the Libby app which I use to listen to audiobooks. It used to work and then one day it stoped playing any sound when casting though it shows the media is playing. I really don't understand why this is happening with my device except this appears to have started after other people reported problems with Google not connecting to radio stations through the Nest devices. I am unsure if the two are related, but perhaps?

Hi Anca0608,

Thanks for the info.

Could you please provide the cast firmware version of your Google Nest speakers?

To check which firmware version you're on, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. At the top right, tap Settings and then Device information.
  5. Under "Technical information," find Cast firmware: X.XXX.XXXXX.

Looking forward to your response.

Best,

Princess
