Cannot cast youtube / youtube music to speaker groups

92blacktt
Community Member

I am having trouble with my google nest / home system where the issue started when my voice command to cast music to speaker groups stopped working.  I can still cast them using voice to individual speakers.  The feedback I get can include "playing music on XXXX" with no music actually playing or "Sorry, youtube isn't installed at the moment".  The home system also stopped responding to play/pause requests using voice commands to my TV.  All of this used to work fine.

But its getting worse now, I cannot cast youtube to my speaker groups even manually using the android app.  However spotify works fine 100% of the time!  I would like to continue using Youtube Premium and not switch to spotify subscription.  Any sugestions?

I contacted google support a few times regarding my home system now working correctly but its not getting resolved and I am not being helped.

I currently have: 3 nest mini (2nd gen), 1 nest mini (1st gen), 2 google chromecast with google tvs, 1 google hub display (2nd gen) and 2 nvidia shield pro 2019s in my system.

Same problem. YouTube music won’t cast to my chromecast speaker group.

Hi folks,

Thanks for posting and apologies for the late response. Let's sort this out.

@92blacktt, a few questions: were there any changes on the network? What troubleshooting steps have you done so far? Have you tried deleting the group and creating a new one? Here's how: https://goo.gle/3BRFNpz

@Exodite, could you confirm if you are using Youtube basic or Youtube Music?

Keep me posted.

Regards,

Nikki

No changes on the network.  I have added and removed speaker groups to no avail.  I am using youtube music, with premium membership.

Hey folks,

For the delays. Just added questions: does the same issue happen when you cast via voice command using the Google Assistant app on your phone? Also, for those users that have Google TV in the speaker group, please try removing it then check if you still have the same issue.

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Muddi

Removing the Google tv I added to the speaker group immediately resolved the issue. With the Google tv in the speaker group it says "YouTube isn't installed at the moment"

Hi hibby50,

Thanks for trying. What is the current cast firmware version of your Google TV? Also, are you able to cast music from YouTube Music app to your speakers?

Muddi

According to the home app, the Google tv cast version is 1.56.292394

I can cast from the YTM app and the home app to the TV only, and in the home app I can select all the individual devices that are a part of my speaker group, but selecting the speaker group in any app fails to cast when the GTV is in the group.

I also don't see option from Android phone YouTube app to cast song on Google home mini. Is this option not available now ?

Same issue. Have loads of Google only devices. Casting stopped working to my "All Speakers" group. Deleted and created a new group, reset all devices (cycled power), tried individually eliminating speakers from the group. No dice. I can cast to my "Upstairs" group just fine, but not everywhere. Very annoying.

Same issue here... Seems to have started when I added my Chromecast w/ gtv to the group....

Having the same issue here. Trying to cast to a speaker group with Chromecast (with Google TV) and a Nest Speaker Second Gen. YouTube Music Icon appears on the TV screen and never loads. YouTube Music (Premium) on my Pixel 4a just loads the song forever. Casting to just the Chromecast or to the nest speaker works. But having the Chromecast and nest in the same speaker group refuses to play any song. Speaker group doesn't play anything either with voice through the assistant. This has been an issue for about a month now.

Hey wavedashdoc,

We're sorry to hear that. Did you try the troubleshooting steps above? What other steps you've done so far?

The only “fix” I see mentioned above is to remove the chromecast with Google tv from the speaker group. But that doesn’t solve the issue - not being able to cast YouTube music to a speaker group that has a chromecast with Google tv. The replication steps are simple:
1. Add chromecast with Google tv to a speaker group (or even create a brand new speaker group with only the chromecast with Google tv in it)
2. Cast YouTube music to the speaker group
Result: YouTube music logo is on the TV screen and no music plays
Like the above user mentioned, it’s been broken for about a month now. Never been an issue before.

As noted by Exodite, the "fix" mentioned below is the only way to play music from either the Chromecast or Nest Speaker. Not both at the same time. Like Exodite said this is not a solution, as the speaker group with both the Chromecast and Nest Speaker will not work together in tandem.

I have the same problem. All individual devices play music when cast to or given a spoken command, Group with Nest Audio speakers only works fine. Creating a new group with Chromecast TV included, the TV shows YouTube icon and Nest Audio responds with "YouTube not installed".

I have restarted all devices, factory reset and reinstalled Chromecast. Nothing fixes the problem. Through a process of elimination by creating various groups and combinations I am certain that it is the Chromecast TV device that causes the problem.

Any help on resolving this would be very much appreciated.

Hey wavedashdoc,

We got the form you've submitted. We'll be reaching out to you via email and let's continue working on your concern through that channel.

@Jefus: To confirm, are you able to cast from your phone to Google TV? How about the other apps like Netflix and Hulu, do you have the same issue when casting it via voice command?

Yes I can cast successfully to all devices when not grouped. And if the group includes Nest Audio without Chromecast TV. Only when I add Chromecast TV to a group of Nest Audio speakers do I receive the YouTube not installed message. I have performed factory reset on all devices and the problem remains the same.

I'm having the exact same issue as all of the above.  At this point I assume all of the broken casting functionality and glitches have something to do with the Sonos patent troll lawsuits. If it's a separate issue please fix asap
