When I attempt to edit a group to add a new speaker, I see a message: "You are not allowed to manage this group".
I created this home and have Manager access.
The group is called "Everything". Another user suggested removing special characters from all my devices. I've done that now (one device in my home, but not the group, had an apostrophe in it). It hasn't helped. I can't remove it or rename the group.
The group contains
- a pair of google home mini (joined as stereo)
- 2 x nest WiFi point
- a nest mini
- a google home mini
Not really sure what I can do to fix this. I can't try removing devices from the group as I have no access. Any help would be appreciated

I had the same issue but found a solution.
- Go to the old home where the group was originally setup.
- Go to "Settings" with the gear icon.
- Go to "Rooms and groups"
- From there find the original group and delete it.
- I also deleted all the devices from the old home.
-Go to the new home and and under settings>rooms and groups. Create new group.
It may have you set up the devices again.

I finally have a resolution for my issue.
After deleting my home from the app, and attempting to recreate everything on a new home I found that my unmanageable groups were still present. I called support and was on the phone with them for nearly an hour.
I can't say for certain, but it seems that the speakers retain some data regarding their groups internally. The unmanageable groups disappeared once I finally factory reset all of the speakers that were in those old groups. This also got rid of their old names and locations.
It seems so obvious now, looking back, but it was such a headache to resolve.

Hey there,
Sorry to hear about the issues you're having with your speaker group, I know this can be frustrating, but I'm happy to help.
I would double check to see if you are the Founder of the speaker group. If not, you'll want to ask the Founder to change the settings so that you can access it.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Best regards,

I have the same issue. I'm sure I'm the founder of the group as my wife hasn't created any groups. How do I confirm that I am the founder?

Very good question. @GarrettDS how do you confirm that you are the founder of the group?

Hi, sorry I took so long to get back. I wasn't able to check the "Founder" through the app, but I know it was me. The problem arose because I have 2 homes set up. The group contained devices from both. The group appears in the list of groups for both homes. It is only if you go in via the original home you are able to configure the group, otherwise you get the "You are not allowed to manage this group" message. There is nothing in the interface that will tell you what home the group belongs to (afaik).
Thanks for your help

I have the exact same problem. I know I am the founder of the group. And it is the everyone group where I have all the devices. Cant edit, Cant delete

I have the same problem. I moved, and created a new home, and moved some devices to it. The new home then had a group I didn't create, want or need, apparently brought in from the old home, because the devices were in that group at the old home. Which is absurd, because the group is not related to the new home, so why show it or import it? And most importantly, why prevent me from deleting it??
01-23-2022 05:34 PM
Turns out I had to destroy the old home, this allowed me to destroy the spurious imported but locked group, this in turn allowed me to add the items to a new group. So clunky, badly designed and badly documented.

Love how GarettDS left as fast as possible without helping anyone. my situation is similar, but would love to get hands on assistance, because I get additional errors like "enrollment can't complete". Is there a phone number for help?

How did you "destroy" the other group?
03-18-2022 01:07 AM
For me, it was simply a case of switching to the correct home then I got the option to remove it The difficulty was knowing what home the group belonged to.

This is ridiculous! My home was setup with no issues! Now, and since the latest update, I'm unable to edit, add, or remove devices.
My nest speakers wont connect to wifi
Nest speaker group are not setup in stereo
Devices are in the wrong home (even after deleting other homes)
Groups can't be deleted
I'm not the manager, so my wife had to be removed.
Devices renamed without special characters
If I have to delete it all and start all over, I might have to find another system.

I have groups I can't edit or delete. I'm the only one that lives here and no one else has access to them.
02-09-2022 12:42 AM
Do you have other homes set up? Even ones you don't use? If so, try deleting the groups from within the other homes, sometimes it magically works
02-09-2022 11:05 AM
I do have another home set up. I really don't want to delete it because it does many things. And playing around I notice that no matter the home I'm using, I get the same error message when I try to delete the group speakers, "you are not allowed to mange this group". Is there someone to call?
02-20-2022 12:35 PM
I have exactly the same issue. It's total bull**bleep** that you can't contact Google directly for help.
03-06-2022 09:30 AM
I'm in the same boat. No help from Google or the "Google Community" - got to say I'm deeply sorry I purchased 7 google devices for my home.
03-15-2022 09:32 PM
An associate at Google's Store support locked my account by charging the wrong card on an order too many times after I called specifically to change it and now, after getting it unlocked, I'm getting this same message about speaker groups I created. Is the only solution to wipe it and start from scratch? I have a LOOOT of stuff I'll have to set back up.
03-17-2022 02:36 PM
OMG...when you go to the group, scroll all the way down and it says delete there! Why didn't staff say so? Duh!
03-17-2022 05:30 PM
The delete option isn't there. That is the problem.
03-17-2022 07:06 PM
I deleted all my home...too many homes is a problem. I started over and now the remove device is visible.

Same problem. None of the remedies so far have worked. Any attempt to delete, modify, or even adjust the volume of a group gives the same error, "you are not allowed to modify this group."

It seems like a common problem, yet there is no guidance from Google. Strange.

Thank you so much for a detailed explanation of this issue and apparent solution. Why was google so silent on this?
