Chrome Audio Issues

So, ice managed to pick up a couple chrome audio devices on fb marketplace as I wanted a single app automation for my home.

First step prior to adding the device to my home group, I performed a factory reset in case there were some settings applied by the previous owner.

With that out of the way, I started to encounter issues activating the app via the device utility manager not being able to activate. I read a couple other blogs on here that suggested changing the clock back to 2019 and then try reactivating. This worked, the device was able to be activated, but when attempting to connect to my wifi network, even after typing in the correct password, it won't connect.

How can I get this to work?

Hello @Jonesy86,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand the trouble you're having getting your Chromecast Audio devices to connect to your WiFi network. It sounds like you have already gone through some very specific troubleshooting steps, and I appreciate you providing all the details.

The issue you've described is a known problem with some older Chromecast devices that have been offline for a long time. The "changing the clock to 2019" workaround is a community solution that correctly addresses an activation bug. However, even after activation, the device may be running a very old firmware version that is not compatible with modern WiFi security protocols, which is why it won't connect even with the correct password.

To get the device working, you will need to get it connected to the internet just long enough for it to update its firmware.

The most common solution is to temporarily adjust your WiFi network's security settings.

  • You can set up a temporary guest network with a less-secure protocol like WPA/WPA2-PSK (TKIP).
  • If you're comfortable with it, you can also temporarily disable security on a guest network altogether.

Once the network is configured, connect your Chromecast Audio to this temporary network. It should then be able to connect and download the latest firmware. After it's updated, you can set your WiFi security settings back to normal.

Once the firmware has been updated, the Chromecast Audio should be able to connect to your regular, secure WiFi network without any issues.

Regards,

Kevin
