Did google change turning on/off lights from functrion to name?

Hi,

i am using lots of Lights and Google Home Mini and Nest Hubs to control my smart home.

I live in germany so I translated the commands from german to english to the best of my knowledge.

I recently noticed that when I say "Hey google - Turn off the light" it turns off all lights in the house that are named "Light" but not the light in the room I am in, called "Ceiling" for example. This worked for years until recently.

Did google change the behaviort from functrion "light" to name?

When I say "Hey Google - Turn off the lightS" it works as expected.

Its not logical to rename every one of the 35 lights at home to Light, you cannot distinguish them anymore.

1) Are all the lights the same brand/using the same app?

Reconnecting the app to Google Home might help.

2) Make sure that the speaker is in the same Room as the light you want to control. Try moving the speaker out of that Room and then back again.

3) All my main lights I want to control in each Room with a speaker are named "Bulb".

With one special Automation I only need to say "Hey Google, Light" to turn the light in that Room ON or OFF.

But I can still say "Turn on light"

Same goes for every other device in each Room...

Speaker is in the same room as the lamp, both are associated tho this room.

The Lamps are mostly Shellys that are connected throug iobroker iot interface to Google Home.

As stated above the setup worked flawless for over 5 Years now and the behavior changed recently.

I dont have automations in GHome because everything is done in ioBroker, google Home is just listening and transfer to ioBroker.

Hi jmeister79,

Thanks for reaching out to our community.

I’m sorry to hear that after 5 years of working flawlessly, the light in the room where you are in, called “Ceiling,” stopped working fine recently. No worries, help is here.

Thank you SmartHomeH-TAGS for your contribution to this post.

Before I start providing assistance, I have a few questions for you:

  • Is your Google Home app updated?
  • Could you please check the status of the “Ceiling” light on the ioBroker IoT interface?
  • Can you check in the Google Home app the status of the “Ceiling” light?

In the meantime, I recommend you follow the next instructions:

  1. Make sure the outlet is receiving power. Check that your wall switch is on.
  2. Turn the bulb off and on. The bulb takes up to one minute after receiving power to reconnect to the Google Home device. Try your light and see if it works.
  3. Try using the bulb in a different lamp/socket.
  4. If the above steps don’t work, you may need to factory reset your bulb and set up the bulb again. (Please refer to the manufacturer manual or to the manufacturer support team to provide you this information).

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Virna
