Not sure how to make requests, but here goes…
if a speaker drops out of my nest audio group, please continue to play the music. I’ve got a jbl portable that I turn on and play music on as part of a group. When I leave the room I turn off the jbl as it runs on batteries, but soon as it switches off it kills audio to everything else.

Hey Si, it works the same for me as well not using a jbl. You can open the Home app and choose your profile pic and use the feedback option there in the pop-up menu or say Hey G, leave feedback and follow the prompts from the speaker. That's the best way to leave feedback.
As an option, if the JBL is in one room, why not just remove it from the group altogether, and then when you plan on roaming to another location in the house move what you're listening to over to the grouped set of speakers. This scenario presupposes, of course, that the jbl is Google Assistant-enabled and not simply a cast enabled device.
