Google Go Phone - Can't call out from Home Max

Hi,

I wonder if someone may be able to help?

I've bought my Grandad a Google Home Max to call my Dad and I in case of an emergency. Managed to set it up so we can call him with video (using Duo). When he tries to call out it asks him to set up Google assistant to get the right permissions. I access:

Google Home >> Account >> Assistant Settings

When doing this it asks that he install the Google app on his phone via the Play store. However, when I try to do this it says there's already a similar app (Google Go) and the install fails.

Basically I'm stuck in a loop as Google Go can't be installed, and it seems incompatible with the Google Home app/Google Home Max. Is this a dead end?
