Google Home - Tap to Pause not working

KP60
Community Member

Hello, my Google home no longer "taps to pause/play" when I tap the top of the device. The sensor appears to work as I can swipe for the volume control and tap hold to initiate a request. Have I perhaps changed a setting? I have rebooted to no avail.

Hi KP60,

Thanks for reaching out. No worries, let's get this issue resolved! I would be more than happy to help.

Since the sensor appears to work, could you try the other touch controls and see if any other features are not working as well?

Here is a link which explains how to control your Google Home device through touch.

Please let me know which touch features are still not working. Thanks for your patience!

Hi,

All other touch features work including rotate for volume control and holding to raise the assistant. It's just tap to play/pause that doesn't work. I have tried rebooting

Hi KP60,

Thanks for your reply back! I appreciate you taking the time to try out the other controls.

Next, could you please try this troubleshooting step? It'll let us know if it's an issue internally or externally.

  • Could you please do a Factory Data Reset on your device?
    • A factory reset will reset your Google Nest or Home speaker or display to its default factory settings.
    • Note: This action will clear your data from the device and can't be undone.
  • Are there any improvements after attempting that troubleshooting step?

I look forward to your response! Thanks for your patience.

Hi,

I have done the factory and reset and unfortunately the tap to play/pause still doesn't work but all other touch controls do.

I and many other people in this thread are STILL experiencing this issue on our devices - i.e. play/pause tap/touch not working despite a factory reset - so what is Google doing to resolve this problem? Seems pretty clear it's a software issue since it was fine until a few months ago (unless it's a common hardware failure).

I also have the same problem, every gesture is working except tap to play/pause. I have also done factory reset and it didn't resolve my problem.

I have the same issue here while playing spotify. This was not restored after factory reset. However to add some additional information, when I stream radio using TuneIn, the top button DOES work and mutes the sound. Could you please have this looked at this, since it is really annoying.

For your information, since this morning I noticed that the mute button in combination with Spotify started to work again at my Google home!!

I have good news, everyone!

After giving up on an answer here I used my Google One subscription benefit of access to customer service to ask about this issue and finally got a solution to the problem...

Google changed the gesture to play/pause from a center tap to a side tap+hold (same as volume, except that you hold after tapping) !!!

BUT...

1) Why didn't Google communicate this change to us owners so that we weren't confused and annoyed, as we have been for all this time?

2) Why didn't any of the Google support staff that have been "helping" in this thread know this change and tell us?

3) Why is the information given on the page https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/7072889?hl=en#zippy=%2Cgoogle-nest-mini-nd-gen outdated and WRONG?

Though I'm happy that I can now pause/play again, I'm pretty angry at this customer service failure and I would like someone at Google to take responsibility and apologise, plus (actually more importantly) fix the wrong information and educate other support staff about this issue so that other owners aren't confused & frustrated in future.
