I finally managed to connect mine by allowing the following permissions on Google Home app.... microphone, camera, contacts, location, nearby devices, phone. The only permission I did not allow was notifications.

To add on, my 5GHz WiFi network has no issues:

a. My other Nest Mini is connecting fine to the 5GHz network

b. Amazon echo devices works fine

c. Laptops, mobile phones etc are all fine on 5GHz

Hi fookyuanloh,

I’m sorry to hear about the trouble you’re experiencing during setup. Try doing the steps below:

  • Reboot your router. Unplug it for 2 minutes.
  • Forget and reconnect your phone to the Wi-Fi.
  • Uninstall and reinstall the Google Home app > Log in.
  • Move your Google Nest Hub 2nd gen closer to the router.
  • Factory reset your Google Nest Hub 2nd gen and then try to do the setup process again.

Regards,
Alex

Hi Alex,

Done that before. No positive signs.

I have already:

1. Different SSID for 2.4GHz and 5GHz

2. Factory reset both Nest Hub and router

3. Nest Hub is at the same location, next to router

4. UPnP, IGMP enabled

5. IPv6 disabled

6. Used a different router

7. Used my cellphone as another 5GHz hotspot

Both item 6 & 7, I am still unable to see the 5GHz Wifi SSID during config, and attempt to manually key in SSID (Other networks during config) but still failed to connect.

Advise please.

Hi there,

I see. We appreciate your efforts in taking those steps. What country are you in?

Best,
Alex

I'm based in Malaysia

The Nest Hub was purchased in Japan

Is there a restriction on JP based nest hubs on 5GHz wifi?

My router runs on CH36 for 5GHz, which technically is allowed in JP or MY

Don't think the channel would the issue, but would like to hear some advise

Hello fookyuanloh,

Thanks for the information. I want to confirm: can your Google Nest Hub 2nd gen discover and connect to 2.4 GHz? Japan is one of the countries where 5 GHz isn’t supported on some Google Nest devices. Is your router running DD-WRT firmware? Try to change the wireless mode setting to "mixed" and change the DNS server to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, then set up your Google Nest Hub again.

Warmly,
Alex

1. Router is an Asus GT-AX6000

2. 5GHz running in Auto mode - option available are Auto, AX only, N/AC/AX mixed, Legacy

Are you suggesting me to run on N/AC/AX mixed?

3. My DNS setting are already on 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, plus 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 as backup

In what sense that 5GHz is unsupported in JP?

Router are sold with 5GHz in JP, so why isn't that supported on Nest Hub Gen 2?

Find your comment on 5GHz unsupported seems to be a Google's choice or firmware rather than a regulatory thing

Laptops and other devices - btw I've also tested a Nest Mini Gen 2 in JP to run in 5GHz, and it works !!??

Anyway I've tried all the above/suggestion from you, still negative

Unable to see the 5GHz WiFi during the re-setup phase - ie: I've factory reset the device and tried to re-connect back

He did that already, and is not the only one having that issue, I have 3 nest hubs with the same issues, while nest minis and google home minis have no issue connecting to the same network, I am in EU region, and devices purchased are from EU, while some google homes are from US, but they all work flawlessly. Not to mention 2.4ghz connection breaks from time to time, causing disruption to music playing in my whole home, minis never lose connection this way, but nest hubs do it all the time, it's a well documented issue on reddit 2 years old, however still not solved.

Thanks Neky !!

I guess this is a known issue - and this is NOT A REGIONAL ISSUE

EU units have the same, JP as well

I don't know where/who else have the same issue.

Google has to own up to this issue.

Personally I don't think it is a hardware issue, more of a firmware/Fuschia OS issue.

HI,  just wondering if you got anywhere with this my nest hub max is exactly the same will not connect to 5ghz wifi cant even see the network

It has been connected to the 5ghz since 2020

No progress

Still the same, just won't connect to a 5GHz wifi

Same issue with me.  Google Nest Hub 2nd Generation worked fine with fibre cable broadband but will not connect to Zyxel NR5103EV2 5G NR Indoor Router. Samsung tablet, Samsung phone, Xiaomi phone, Lenovo Thinkpad, Chromecast with Google TV, Eufy doorbell, Samsung TV all work fine off the Zyxel,

No replies from  Google thus far.

Initially they wanted to replace a unit for me, however they insist I need to return from the same country/location where I bought that from.

Positive news!!

Did you reset or reconnect the Google Hub after you allowed permssions on Google Home app?

Confirmed on router it's now connected on 5GHz WiFi?

I think I reset the Hub after allowing the permissions. Just looked at the router settings it is connected on 5GHz WiFi

This inability to connect the Max to 5Hhz has been a problem for years, and it's continuing to drive me bonkers - especially since we lose connection whenever the microwave's used thanks to it only connecting via 2.4GHz! Not too surprisingly, the app permissions solution didn't work for me; similarly, today I've once again tried entering the SSID info manually (having read elsewhere that this worked for someone) with no luck. Also today tried creating a unique (5GHz-only) SSID just for the Max (which has fixed issues I've had with other devices before), but wouldn't see/connect to that.

Has anyone found a solution, eg specific 5GHz network settings or other router settings, or got ideas as to what could be worth trying? (I've read some of the Nest devices don't like some of the higher frequencies on 5GHz but the relevant AP isn't using these...). Welcome any ideas! Thanks.

mine was connected to 5gb from new to 6 months ago, (approx 2years) now it cannot even see the 5gb network

its either due to a  firmware update or it's a hardware failure

Interesting… Ours has not been able to ‘see’ or connect to 5 GHz for the near four years we’ve owned it, so not a recent problem at all. And that’s with at least two different WiFi products (previously Grandstream APs and now Aruba). So, for us, it’s not a change.

It really frustrates me that a company with the resources of Google are so cavalier with their product support - they seem to not even admit it’s a problem and certainly don’t appear to have offered a resolution in over four years…
