Google Mini says mic is off then says mic is on

My Google mini started to say mic is off and mic is on.  This is random and sometimes works for a day and then starts telling me mic is on and then off.  I have tried everything.  From other posts it seems that the thing is out of warranty and can't be replaced. Is this a hardware problem or software problem or ??
