Google Nest Mini resets overnight

Perseus
Community Member

A few years ago I bought a Google Nest Mini to control the lights in my bedroom which has worked great. Last year I expanded my lighting to the living room so bought another identical device to have one in my bedroom and the other in the living room to allow me to control the lights in both rooms.
The entire time I've had the device, it constantly resets every few days. It always seems to happen overnight (between 1am and 8am) and I'm unsure if it's exactly the same time or just somewhere in this period but has never happened during the day. There seems to be no pattern to how often it will reset sometimes going a few days with no issues and other times resetting every night.

Whenever this happens I'll notice when I try to use the device the day after and be told a series of different messages such as "I can't connect to the wi-fi network", "something went wrong" or more. Every time requires me to open up the Google Home app on my phone and most the time needs me to set up the device as new (add new device).

I've tried searching for other fixes and mostly seen about factory resets or trying a different plug socket, none of which have worked (and from the comments I couldn't see anyone with similar issues ever getting back saying theirs had worked either).

Hi Perseus,

Thanks for posting in the community.

I’m sorry to hear that the Google Nest Mini you assigned to control the lights in your living room is constantly resetting overnight and requires you to set it up repeatedly. I appreciate you sharing the troubleshooting steps you've already tried, including factory resetting and using a different power outlet. No worries, help is here.

Before I start further troubleshooting, let me ask you a few questions:

  • How long did the Google Nest Mini work before the connectivity inconvenience started?
  • What is the current firmware version of both your Google Nest Mini devices? You can find this by following the steps in this Google Nest Help Center article: Google speaker and display firmware versions and release notes
  • Are you using a single router or multiple access points?
  • What’s the location of the affected Google Nest Mini in relation to the WiFi access points or routers?
  • Have there been any recent changes to your environment, such as a change in WiFi network or recent outages?
  • What WiFi frequency band is connected to the affected Google Nest Mini and your mobile device (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz)?

I will be looking forward to hearing from you."

Best regards,

Virna

Hi Virna,

  • I'm not sure when the disconnecting started but it may have been since I got the device as the first few times it happened being intermittent I didn't notice it was going to be a continuous issue.
  • The firmware version for both devices is 468348.
  • I'm using a single router with no other access points or signal boosters.
  • The affected Google Nest Mini is around 2.5m from the router (the unaffected device is further away).
  • There's been no change in WiFi network or recent outages (my flatmate works nights so would have informed me if there'd been any other issues that could be the cause).
  • Both devices are connected to 2.4GHz WiFi.

Kind regards,

Perseus

Hi Perseus,

Thanks for your prompt response and the comprehensive information you've given. I really appreciate it so I can better assist you.

Based on the information received, I recommend you try the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Reboot your router.
    1. Unplug the WiFi router from the power source for 2 minutes.
    2. Ensure that the router's lights turn off completely when unplugged. Some routers have backup battery packs, so you may need to disconnect the battery packs as well to ensure that the router is completely turned off.
    3. After 2 minutes, plug the router back into its power source.
    4. Once all the router lights are back on and you find the network name listed in the WiFi options on your mobile device or computer, check if the Google Nest Mini is also connected to the WiFi network.
    5. Verify if the inconvenience is resolved, but if it persists, go to the next step.
  2. Reboot the affected Google Nest Mini:
    1. Unplug the power cord from the affected Google Nest Mini.
    2. Leave it unplugged for one minute.
    3. Plug the power cord back in.
  3. Reboot the mobile device that you use to set up the Google Nest Mini.
  4. If a reboot doesn't fix the issue, perform a factory reset.
    1. On the side of your device, switch the mic off. The lights will turn orange.
    2. Press and hold the center of the Nest Mini, where the lights are on top. After 5 seconds, your device will begin the factory reset process.
    3. Continue to hold for about 10 seconds more, until a sound confirms that the device is resetting.

Please keep me updated.

Hi Virna,

I rebooted the router as per step 1, although this morning the device had disconnected again with the message "I can't connect to the WiFi network" when attempting to use it (as this isn't consistently each night it can take a while to verify if a fix has or hasn't worked).
I've now rebooted the device and mobile device and set up the Nest Mini again as suggested in steps 2 and 3 and will let you know if this has any impact. These are steps I've attempted in the past (including a factory reset) however I'll continue with the process/steps provided for troubleshooting.

Thanks,
Perseus.

This morning the device again needed setting up again after performing steps 2 and 3. I've now completed step 4 (factory reset) and setup the device again.

Hi Virnab,

I've not yet heard anything from your team after filling out the form and wanted to provide an update here.

The other week I took the device back to where it was bought from for them to perform a warranty test, explaining the odd nature behind the issue and they said they'd likely need to keep it for a few days as it's an overnight issue that isn't something they can conventionally test for. After a week, I went back and they said they hadn't experienced the same issues with the device and wouldn't be able to do anything but to come back and they can try again if the issue persists.

As they didn't experience the issue and my other Google Nest hasn't had the same issue, I believed this couldn't have been due to either the hardware or software and thought maybe it's due to my Google account. To test this, I created a new Google account and set up both devices from scratch onto the new account (I believe this was done on Thursday).

As of this morning however, on attempting to use the device the message "this device isn't set up yet. To get started, download the Google Home app on a phone or tablet" is repeated and as usual the other device in my bedroom has continued working as normal.

Thanks,

Perseus

I have same issue as Perseus, but my nest started failing a couple weeks after first intialization.
I live in Chile, is there something I can do? I already tried the 4 steps twice.
Hope you can help me
