Google home turns back on by itself after turning it off

An_Ick
Community Member

Hello!

For the last few months, 5 to 20 minutes after turning it off, it starts playing again by itself... I have to wait for the annoying commercials to finish and then say "hey google, stop" a few times before it stops...! I tried clearing the cache and make a factory reset but didn't work. Any solution? Thanks!

Hi An_Ick,

Thanks for visiting the Community.

What's happening with your Google Home is pretty weird. When it's plugged in, do you see any LED showing at the top of the device? Also, aside from you, are there any accounts/users linked to your speakers? Lastly, have you created any routines using the Home app?

We'd like to know more details about it so we can try some steps that might resolve this. Looking forward to your response.

Best,

Princess

Hello!

There is no light apart from when I talk to it.

I'm the only person in my household so no one is connected to it. I don't have routine, I don't even know what's that. 😅

I didn't change anything to it since I've had it. It's up to date as well.

It is really strange indeed. It seems like I found other people having this problem a few months ago but I can't find the forum about it anymore. 😕

Hey An_Ick,

Chiming in to ensure everything is covered here. To confirm, do you still hear about commercial playing when it turns on? How often does it happen? Also, what is the firmware version of your speaker?

To check which firmware version you're on, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. Tap Settings > Device information.
  4. Under 'Technical information', check for Cast firmware: 'X.XXX.XXXXX'. If the device is on Fuchsia, check for system firmware version: 'X.XXXXXXXX.X.XXXXXXX'

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hello!

do you still hear about commercial playing when it turns on? - - - Not always but almost everytime. sometimes it goes right back to playing the radio station I was listening to. That's weird!

How often does it happen? - - - I'd say 95% of the time. I use it 2-3 times per week.

Also, what is the firmware version of your speaker? - - - 1.56.324896

Hey An_Ick,

Thanks for coming back to us. Could you tell us the firmware version of your device? Also, does it happen while the device is on stand by mode?

Cheers,

Muddi

Yes it's on stand by because the only thing I say is "hey google, stop". Then 5-20 minutes later it turns back on by itself.

I've said my firmware version in my previous reply : 1.56.324896

Hi An_Ick,

To confirm, does it happen after you listen to the radio or even after playing music?

Hi Muddi,

I never listen to music though my Google Home, only radio.

But I can try and test it during the next week and let you know. But please don't close the thread for "no activity". 😅

Hey An_Ick,

Sure! I'll keep the thread open. I was thinking that the dead air has something to do with the ads you got from the radio station. Let's see once you've tried playing music.

Muddi

I don't use my Google Home everyday so I was waiting to use it and check if the problem is still there...

Hello!

So I haven't had the chance to test it with music yet. I rarely listen to music, mostly radio. 😕

Today I stopped the radio by tapping the top of the speaker once. It did the same thing : started back by itself 5-10min later. I said "hey google, stop", it stopped... And started AGAIN 5-10min later.

I think I'm justified going to buy a new one... So annoying! 🤦‍♀️

Hi An_Ick,

Please check the status of your device from the Google Home app after you stop the music. Let's see if it stopped or just paused the song/radio. Also, could you tell us when and where you purchased your device?

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi Muddi!

I will check into that in the next few days.

As for the purchase date, it was a while ago, I'd say 3-4 years (seems like it was just before the pandemic... 🤔).

Hi there,

Great! I'll wait for the outcome. Yay! We only have 1-2 years of warranty for Google Home/Nest devices, depending on what country you purchased your device.

Pretty sure it's a Google problem and not a "my speaker" problem. My boss has a Nest mini, and apparently it makes some weird similar things... Like starting in the middle of the night. 😱 That's so wrong...

Hi Muddi,

OK so I just checked and indeed, it pauses the radio instead of stoping it. It's weird because I say "hey google stop", which always worked before.

I will try and say something different to see if it'll fix the problem!

Hi An_Ick,

Thanks for trying. Just to add, could you say, "Hey Google, Stop Casting," let's see if your device status on the Google Home app will change.

Cheers,

Hi!

I tried : didn't work. 😉

I also tried "turn off" or other similar commands, with no success. The only thing that works is to stop casting through Google Home app. So strange!
