Google misidentifies one device and ignores another

I now have a new mystery.

I have three Smart Life devices in my bedroom:

  1. A smart outlet named “Bed Light”
  2. A Smart outlet named “Hisense” (a TV set)
  3. A Smart lamp dimmer named “Bedroom Track”

All three devices are present (with those names) in the Smart Life app and all commands for them work fine.

HOWEVER, After I last synced devices in Google, just two devices appear in the bedroom location – the “Hisense” device and “Bedroom LightS plural. I can voice control Hisense just fine

but if

I ask Google to turn on “bed Light” I’m told it’s a device that hasn’t been set up yet or is unavailable.

I ask Google to turn on “Bedroom LightS, Google turns on the Bedroom track and then complains that the “Bed Light” isn’t available right now. A turn off  Bedroom lightS command turns off the track, but again “bed Light isn’t………“.

I have a reputation for ferreting out problems and it appears Google should definitely get me on their beta testing list since if it can be broke I’ll surely break it!

Why Google decided that a dimmer with no mention of “light” in its name got grouped with an actual light and coming up with “Bedroom Light S”.

I realize that this is not related to the misunderstood thing, but you guys in the forum are super smart and VERY helpful so maybe you can help with this.

Hey jukerjim,

Thanks for sharing details about the issue. My apologies for the late response. I know the feeling when you're having issues controlling your smart devices using your Google Home/Nest device. A few questions: when did the issue start? Are the lights and dimmer located in one room? Have you tried unlinking your Smart Life account from the Google Home app? How about renaming the device? Does the same issue happen when you use the Google Assistant on your phone?

Looking forward to your response.

Cheers,

Muddi

I created a detailed explanation of the situation but sending it as a response failed. Address unknown.

Please let me know if you receive this?

Thanks for the reply Muddi,

First off I’ll admit to having an extensive and somewhat complex automation system but Google seems to foul up the simplest and most basic things.

Here’s the description of the situation and the LATEST problem.

In a room named “Bedroom” there are the following devices:

A smart outlet named “Hisense” a TV set

A smart outlet named “Bed Light”

An outdoor type light dimmer named “Bedroom Track”

Those three devices are all within the SMART LIFE app.

(There is another device in the bedroom, but it’s not involved).

Those three devices appear correctly in the Smart Life app and I can control each of them from my tablet and Google voice commands to turn them on and off individually works fine, but After unlinking and relinking Smart Life AND asking Google to sync devices, just two devices appeared in the bedroom: “Hisense” and “Bedroom lights”. A voice command “turn on the bedroom lights properly turns both the bed light smart outlet AND the bedroom track dimmer. Voice commands to turn on/off the bed light or bedroom track individually work properly too, but I have routines that need those devices separated.

Google phone support suggested that I reinstall both of those devices. I did that and lo and behold, Google Home showed all three devices; However after resyncing devices in google, -  again, -  Just the two devices described above showed up.

I simply don’t understand why Goggle has decided a device with a name not in any way identified as a light gets bundled with a device clearly containing the word light.

If you need additional info to help figure out this goofy problem, let me know.

Hopefully you can help.

Jim
