Google nest hub 2 display turns on randomly at night

ThomasBln
Community Member

Since some days mx Google nest hub 2 display turns on randomly at night around 3 am. Motion and sleep sensor is switched off. I tried everything. I turned off display at the evening. But in the night it turns on by itself.

Same problem is described here but Thrad is closed without any solution:

Hello folks,

I appreciate everyone's patience and for keeping this thread active.

Some users have confirmed that this is already fixed as new software was released a few days ago. Kindly check your device's cast firmware version if it's on its latest version to make sure that everything is all working on the new update. Here's the current firmware version of all Google Nest speakers:

Feel free to chime in anytime if you have additional questions.

Best,

Hi ThomasBln,

Thanks for reaching out. I know how it feels when something isn’t working as it should. Try to turn off the Ultrasound Sensing feature and observe if it makes a difference.

To turn Ultrasound Sensing on or off, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. Tap Favourites or Devices .
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. Tap Settings and then Recognition and sharing.
  5. Turn Ultrasound Sensing off.

Regards,

Juni

Any updates on this -- my nest hub does this consistently at around 3:45am to 4:00am central time -- I have to go in and reset the display to clock and then display off to turn it back off.  Incredibly annoying to wake up to a bright screen.  Tried all settings and the display is set to off when the room is dim and I have turned on the do not disturb features.  Trying th ultrasensitive sound item.

I turned off all recognition sensors: Ultrasonic sensor, sleep recognition, noise recognition and motion sensor/gestures. I am using Google home preview app on Android and preview Firmware on Google nest hub 2.

I'm having the same problem. I have already tried turning off the gesture detection, but did not know to try turning off the ultra sonic sensor. I'll do that and report back results here.

After making the recommended changes my best hub is bearable. Sometimes the screen is off all night. Most of the time it shows a picture, but it is so dim that it does not cause me problems. I don't keep mine right next to my bed though so it might not work out it I did. This super dim display mode is very strange and seems like a problem of its own.

So better, but not working as expected. I have gestures off, ultrasonic off, and night mode is off (not clock).

This is not the solution for the Problem. I think that display should stay switched off in the night.

Hi @Muddi, hi @Juni.

Can you give us any news? Its very annoying getting awake in night by this bug.

Please help.

First night display stays switched off. Maybe due to new Firmware 12.20230611.1.67 which solves the problem.

@Juni  @Muddi

I have the exact problem than ThomasBIn. The display of my nest hub (2nd generation) is turning itself on each night, and the light wakes me up. Each. Effing. Night. Not great for a device that's supposed to help you "sleep better"...

I tried every potential solution I found on the web. Turning off all the features (the gesture, sense motion, etc.). Setting the dark theme, auto brightness, the "turn off the display when brightness is low", the option to put display in standby after 5 minutes of inactivity. Setting a night mode with DND. None of this helped. My guess is that these are updates that turns on the display at night.

According to what I found on the web, many users have had the same problem for several years. I should have done more research before purchasing this product last week....

What is the fix you propose?

Thanks

Hi @Meowmf : Which firmware you have on your nest hub 2? For me, it seems that latest Firmware 12.20230611.1.67 which was released a few days ago solved this Problem.

FYI - I just received that Firmware update -- though it locked up my device in the middle of the night last night.  I ended up unplugging and plugged it in this morning.  Removed and re-added the device will see if if the display goes on tonight and then I will try turning back on the features I have had turned off.  Hope that firmware does the trick.

I was able to turn on all sensors, motion detection and sleep analyzer back again with this new preview firmware 12.20230611.1.67 without having this display turning on problem at night again. So it seems to be solved.

My device has the upgraded firmware.  The problem is not resolved for my device.  The display will show the clock sometimes after 2am central time.  Display is set to turn off when the lights are dim.  Ultra Sensing is off.  To not be blasted by light I have switched the device to dark theme, selected the dark clock face and selected ambient light setting to the most dim display.  I do have another nest mini in the house so I may switch the device out as the other is in the kitchen.  That device also has the firmware update and seems to keep the display off.

Hello,

like rmorit01 said, the issue is not resolved. I also still have the same problem. Every night between 2 and 5 a.m. the nest hub gen 2 does it's restart but while doing it, it turns up the brightness and stays at the Google logo with white background waking you up in the night. I already made 2 factory resets with no changes. I also have all options set to the darkest option without any positive change. Please keep looking into this and keep us updated.

Systemfirmware: 12.20230611.1.67

Cast-Firmware: 1.70.377722

This issue still ongoing and has not been fixed for me or any of my hubs.

Issue is still there. Also had it this night.

This still not fixed!!!! & I have the latest firmware!

Hello
This issue is still not resolved. I have the latest firmware on my device and roughly between 3 and 4am it turns it self on overnight… which wakes me everyday.

I’m wondering if this will ever be fixed or if google displays just aren’t suitable for being in bedrooms.

I was able to get my Nest Hub to stay dark all night.  With the following procedure.

1. Turn on Preview Program

2. Reboot

3. Unplug Nest for a few minutes

My display stayed off all night until I spoke to it this morning.

my steps were

1. Get into bed and turn lights off

2. displayed turned off (like it should)

3. asked google what the weather is as like tomorrow

4. Screen was on at this stage (takes a few mins to turn back off normally)

5. Said "hey google screen off"

6. Screen turned off immediately

7. Screen did not turn on again even when I opened blinds until I said "hey google, good morning"

8. crossing my fingers that this works again tonight!

This is a workaround though, not a solution. In the night I want to be able to check the time of the dimmed display. Therefore I can't say "turn off the screen" because then also the clock is not visible.

I swapped my devices from kitchen to bedroom. Both displays with the current firmware turn the screen on after 2am.  To me, the device is not recognizing to turn off the display when it detects a dim condition.  Second I notice the device requires me to reset several display options before it will turn off the display again. That is setting the display from off to clock and back has no effect.  I need to also change other settings like low light e.g , dim to dark and back again.  Note that the timeout at 5 minutes and turn off screen settings has no effect either when this happens. That is the display is just "on" and none of the settings are respected.

Lastly I have all setting to dark, ambient light sensing to lowest setting and color matching environment off.

Just wanted to share that I dim the device so that when the display turns on this is what it looks like Display at night after 2 am

For me it doesn't open the main menue. The problem is the restart time in which it just shoes the Google logo with white background and stays super bright. After, it dims itself again how it should but not while it's restarting

If anyone from Google monitors this - for me, I find that in the middle of night when I see the display on. The ONLY way I can turn it off is to FIRST turn on/off the control that says "Turn off display after 5 minutes of inactivity"- if I don't manipulate that setting no other settings allows the display to go off.  So setting the display to dim or bright or off doesn't have an effect until AFTER I manipulate the 5 minutes of inactivity option.

I have the same problem. Tried everithing said before and the screen keeps turning on at around  3:30am. I complained to google technical support explaining the problem and got silly suggestions that solved nothing. The firmware version is the latest and I have even tried with a second unit I have in the kitchen and it behaves exactly the same, turning on the screen at night.

Same issue here, Google support never provides good help. I'm sick of sending feedback in app. Google doesn't care about their users, that is very clear. This issue has been going on for months.

Hello, like already said, the problem is still there. After 2 a.m. it turns on and stays in this screen (The blue is actually white). I have to touch the screen or swipe and eventually it will go away and turn off into night mode. Last night it didnt even react and i needed to unplugged the power.
