Google nest hub call another room not working

rmalik25

Hi, I have 2 nest devices: Nest hub in the living room and nest mini in the bedroom. I am able to broadcast messages fine to form the hub to the mini, but I see there is an option for calling another room as well which does not work.

When trying to call the bedroom from living room, I get response of “unavailable” on the nest hub. I have setup duo on both nest devices - linked to the same account. What else can I be doing to get this working?

FYI - I am make calls to contacts in my duo so I know that the Duo account is setup correctly

Hey rmalik25,

Thanks for reaching out — let's see what's going on.

Was it working before? What's the exact command you use when calling your other speakers? If you're calling the same contact name there's a chance that it will not go through, is it working when you call a different contact name? Check if  the incoming calls for a specific speaker or display is turned on/off.

  • Open the Google Home app.
  • Tap Settings > Communication > Device & Call Settings.
  • Turn your speaker or display on On or off Off.

Keep us posted!

Best,

Alex

Was it working before? == No, trying the feature for the first time.

What's the exact command you use when calling your other speakers? ==> Hey Google, call bedroom

If you're calling the same contact name there's a chance that it will not go through, is it working when you call a different contact name?  ==> I am not trying to call a contact,  I am just trying to make a intercom call between the Nest Hub (in Living Room) to the Google Home Mini (in the bedroom)

Thanks

Rahul

Hey rmalik25,

Thanks for the update.

While intercom isn't supported, you can broadcast your message to our other Google Home or Google Nest speakers. You can send messages to everyone in the entire home by broadcasting messages on all Google Nest and Home speakers and displays, and other third-party devices with Google Assistant. You can also set up a Family Group so that their message is broadcast on all the devices included in their family group. Check this guide for more information.

Regards,

Alex

Hi, thanks for your response. Will have a look at the link and explore the broadcast feature more.

question - why does the nest hub present me with the option to “Call another Room” if the feature doesn’t actually work? I can see this option under the “Communication” tab

Hey rmalik25,

It's related to broadcasting messages to your other speakers. You can try pressing on the screen of your Nest Hub to test it out. Let me know if you have additional questions about Broadcasting.

Thanks,

Alex

Don’t think it’s related to broadcast. When I touch “Call another room” it gives me 2 options to call: Bedroom and “living room”.

when I touch “bedroom” the assistant responds with “making a call to bedroom using duo” - it’s trying to make a call to bedroom google home mini using duo - not a broadcast. It ultimately fails. Seems like a pointless feature to be showing on the display if it doesn’t actually work.

Hey rmalik25,

Chiming in, are all the speakers connected to the same network? Are they in the same home structure? Also, are you having issues calling your contacts using Duo calling on your device?

Cheers,

Muddi

Yes both are on same network and same home structure. And yes,  I have been able to make duo calls to contacts before as well

Hey rmalik25,

Thanks for the information. Could you try using the Google Assistant on your phone and tell it to call your speaker. Also, is the Duo app working now?

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi rmalik25,

How was your Nest Hub? Have you had the chance to call on Duo using the Google Assistant app on your phone?

Cheers,

Muddi
