Media Stops Playing After a Few Seconds

GigaBill
Community Member

So … if I start playing media from any source, such as Spotify, Pandora, etc., and I’m casting it to a speaker group, it will start playing BUT stops playing after a few seconds. Now, if I play it just on a single device it doesn’t stop.  I’ve never had a problem until just a couple of days ago.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

I JUST started having the same issue since adding the Nest Audio speaker to my group 2 days ago! Everything was fine before! I had a Nest Mini, a Hub with screen, and an older Nest Home/Hub without screen. I had them in 2 groups (whole house vs kitchen) and I have been using YouTube Music for a couple years. No issues until I added the Audio and now it’s all jacked. I’ve reset everything and removed and readded and that didn’t help. If I remove the Audio from the group it works again, though. Are they just trying to force us to upgrade?

Same here, did not make any changes to my speaker group…consists of a google hub, google home and a few chrome cast audios.  It was just a few days ago the group started acting up….plays music for a few seconds than stops.  Doesn’t matter what the source is (YouTube music, TuneIn, etc), none of it works.  Speakers on their own seem to do fine though.  Nest team thanks in advance for the assistance

Same here, this started last week. Works one day, doesn't work the next. I have rebooted all my speakers multiple times, but the problem persists. The audio source doesn't matter - it dies trying to use the "Help Me Sleep" app too, after about 10 seconds.

With all the mess Google has made in this space lately, I have ceased recommending any of the Nest speakers to all my contacts and clientele.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for reaching out.

Sorry to hear about your experience with playing media using your Google Nest speakers. I appreciate all the details you've shared that would help us sort this out.

Has anyone of you tried deleting and creating a new speaker groups? Let's go ahead and try that, also, kindly provide your device's cast firmware version so I can check further what's causing this to happen.

I look forward for your response.

Best,

Princess

I’ve the steps you have advised but it doesn’t help at all, sharing the details you’ve requested.  Looking for the fix ASAP.

System firmware version: 282045

Cast firmware: 1.56.282045

Here’s an update:

I’ve noticed that the group speakers work if I request Google (by voice) to start playing on a single speaker (with a display), then, from that display I can change the speaker group (hitting the lower left button on the display) and it then works fine on all speakers.  Now, if I use my voice to request a speaker group, it plays for a couple of seconds then stops????!!!????

That’s what happens to me and only since I added the Audio speaker to the group. Before that, my newest speaker was a Nest Mini.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the update. I appreciate all the details you shared.

I'll be happy to look into this so we can sort this thing out. Meanwhile, could you provide the cast firmware versions of your Google Home/Nest devices that has been affected as this would be very helpful in finding a fix to this.

Looking forward to your response.

Best,

Princess

Hello how would I find this information that princesses is asking for?
because I’ve also been having the same issue of the sound waves that I play for my dogs suddenly every morning times out multiple times. I’ve tried unplugging the mini but that has not solve any issues at all.

Same here. If I use my voice it plays 5-10 seconds and shuts off. Used your work around starting on Google Hub, hitting lower left and selecting my home group.

I have updated every device, deleted everyone and added them back, created a new home group, seems to be tied to the two new Nest speakers. I several Mimi’s and Hubs around the house works fine without the Nest speakers

Same here, any solutions so far?

The only thing that I have found that works so far is to start playing music on one device, let it play for a few seconds, THEN tell it to play it on house speakers. I don’t know why, but that works here.

Hmmm I just tried that and it starts on all other devices (I made a group called “all speakers”) and then it stops again after a few seconds. Are you choosing another group or are you selecting other devices individually after playing it on one for a few seconds?

It works for me when I change the speakers on a display Device (Nest Hub).

I have a group with all my speakers called House Speakers and I just tell Google to Play this on House Speakers.

Same problem. Cast firmware 1.56.282045

I can cast to our Alexa using Spotify, so it's Google that's the issue, I think. Very frustrating.

Still having the problem. No help from Google to me means I'm not buying Google products anymore. Alexa works just fine.

Same, they've been rubbish for the few months. The speakers stop working properly and I get no help except have you tried turning it off and on again. I've got 6 speakers but it's going to be expensive to replace them but I want something that works!

Did anyone ever find a resolution to this. I have 5 google mini’s and as soon as I added the Nest Audio the home speakers stop playing after 4 seconds?

GigaBill

It's pretty embarrassing. I tried to show off to some friends the other day, how I can ask Google to play X on ALL SPEAKERS ... and it plays, then quickly just STOPS.  Clearly this is a real problem ... and eventually Google will admit it. But in the meantime ... Google just looks bad, once again.

Yeah. I hear you. I have over $2k worth of google equipment that won’t do the one thing I bought it for now. To play music. I don’t even mess with the smart features I just want it to play audio on my thousands of dollars worth of speakers and hubs.

Having this same issue as of yesterday. Cast Firmware = 1.56.291758

Start playing to a group and after about 5 seconds it just stops on all of the speakers. I have about 12 devices in a group Hubs, Minis, Original Home, Nest Audio, Chromecast with Google TVs a little bit of everything. This was working flawlessly a couple days ago.

Update* After doing a bit more investigation. I started a new group and added everything one by one. As soon as I add either one of my first gen nest hubs it causes the group to stop playing music after about 5 seconds and plays a disconnect jingle. Any other device outside of first gen nest hubs play well with each other and I am able to play music to the group uninterrupted as long as the two first gen nest hubs are not in the group.

here is some more info about my first gen nest hubs.

They both seems to have the following version info

Software Version: 40.15.3.412086197

Cast Firmware Version: 1.56.291758

Operating System Version: 4.20210608.1.1146075

This is pre Fuchsia without the app drawer. So looks like they just need to be upgraded in order to be fixed? Are the first gen hubs Fuchsia capable?

Hmm looks like my previous post was deleted.

it appears to be at least for me that the 1st Gen Nest Hubs are causing the group playback problems. Anytime I add a first gen hub to a group it causes the group to stop play after 5 seconds and plays a disconnect sound. Remove them with any other combination of devices and the group works.

Both of my 1st Gen Nest Hubs are at the following versions.

Software Version: 40.15.3.412086197

Cast Firmware Version: 1.56.291758

Operating System Version: 4.20210608.1.1146075

These are pre Fuchsia OS it seems without the app drawer. My nest Hub Max and 2nd Gen Nest hub both have Fuchsia and they work fine with group playback. So if you want your groups to work in the mean time remove any 1st gen nest hubs from the group.

Can the first gen nest hubs be upgraded to Fuchsia OS?

Any luck with finding a resolution to this? My Gen1 has been upgraded to fuchsia, but this problem is still there.

I ended up making a fresh new speaker group to get it to stop stopping after 10 seconds of playing, but now, the audio cuts in and out randomly which is very frustrating. None of this happened before adding this stupid mini to my set up.

No luck yet. My devices have not updated yet. But it appears that’s not the  root cause of the problem considering your findings.

This problem description matches exactly what I am experiencing: if my Google Nest Hub is in a speaker group with other devices, casting Spotify or other audio to a speaker group will start BUT always stop playing after a few seconds.

While testing today, I found that the problem did not occur if the Nest Hub was the only device in a new speaker group. When I added a second device to that group, the problem occurred again.

I tested both existing and newly-created speaker groups, with a variety of other Google devices.

Google Nest Hub details:
System firmware version: 4.20210608.1.1146075
Cast firmware version: 1.56.291758
Preview program: Off

Hello everybody! I just had the same problem but I fixed it connecting the nest to my devices thru Bluetooth instead of the airplay… hope this can help you…

How do you do that!?

GigaBill

So … anyone find any solutions yet? Still stops playing after a voice request is made to play music on X speaker group.

Jamie_B

Same issue here. I have a group with x10 devices, and the only way I can get it to play without stopping after 5 seconds is to remove the two gen 1 Google Home Hubs in the group. This is really annoying!

Group consists of Google and Nest Minis, Gen 1 Homes, Chromecast Audios, and the Gen 1 Home Hubs, as far as I can tell, all running the latest release firmware.

I had the same issue. 6-7 speakers throughout my house grouped as "The Whole House." Music would play for 5-6 seconds and drop out completely. This sucked but I deleted all of the speaker groups that I had created and made new ones. Everything seems to be working so far.
