Nest Hub (2nd gen.) not collecting Sleep data

DeanN

This issue was raised couples of times in this forum. Worse, the threads are closed while providing no solution.

I bought 2 Nest Hubs (2nd gen.), one for my wife and one for me, to keep track of night sleep. I set up the same way in our phone (both of our email addresses are personal, not business), with Google Home and Google Fit, calibrated and activated Sleep Sensing. Mine shows "No sleep data past 24 hours",  while hers shows full collection of sleep data (time of sleep,  wake up, duration, breaths per minute, snore etc.)

So I switched our Nest Hubs, trying to see what happened. The result: hers works and mine doesn't.

So I concluded something wrong with my Nest Hub. I went back to the store to exchange for another one.

For the new one: doesn't collect sleep data too! My second conclusion is something wrong with the setup, not the hardware. I'm waiting for Google to solve this issue. It's not only me, but for a lot of people have the same problem.

After unlink devices in Google Fit and reset Nest Hub in Google Home, my Nest Hub name appears in Fit tracking devices. Last night for the first time, it collects full sleep data in both Nest Hub and Fit. Hooray!

After comparing between my phone and my wife's phone, scanning bit by bit, I've found one difference that could be the culprit: Google Fit. You can't change the device names in the "Settings for other devices" of Google Fit, but you can change the device names in Google Home. If they are not matched, Nest Hub won't send sleep data to Google Fit (because of wrong name). My wife's Nest Hub has the same name in both in Google Home and Google Fit. meanwhile mine doesn't.

How to check device's name in Google Fit: Profile (icon in bottom right) >Settings (top right) . Tracking Preferences >Settings for other devices. The list of devices are there.

I changed my Nest Hub's name back to the name show in Google Fit, let's see whether it will collect sleep data tonight or not, then I'll tell you.

I think Google should make the Sleep Sensing setup less complicated.

This might also be useful for anyone coming from Google search wondering if their Nest Hub is defective:

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/10357288

>Note: For your sleep summary to appear on your Nest Hub (2nd gen), you’ll need to allow personal results and Proactive health & fitness results on your display. Web & App Activity also needs to be turned on in your Google account. To receive answers from Google Assistant related to your sleep information, personal results and Voice Match need to be turned on.

>When personal results and Proactive health & fitness results are on, anyone with access to your Nest Hub (2nd gen) can review and delete your most recent Sleep Sensing summary and wellness details.

Tl;dr: you need to grant almost all permissions to Google Assistant and Google Fit.
