Nest Hub will not display webpages

rdq
Community Member

I previously posted this issue, but the thread was closed because I didn't get a chance to response to replies quick enough.

On all my Nest Hubs (1st and 2nd gen) I cannot view any websites. The display shows:

>>>

Can't be shown

Websites are turned off for this device

...
...

<<<

I went to Notifications & digital wellbeing for each device in Home app and I tried setting up device with and without Digital Wellbeing filters and nothing seems to solve the issue. I created a filter for everyone with Allow Websites checked off, but still no access to web pages.

What am I doing wrong?

Nest Hub (1st gen)

System firmware version 9.20221010.3.176
Cast firmware version 1.67.330920

Nest Hub (2nd gen)

System firmware version 324896
Cast firmware 1.56.324896

Hi rdq,

That certainly isn’t the experience we want you to have and thank you for doing the mentioned troubleshooting steps  — when did your issue begin? Were there any recent changes made? It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router followed by your Nest speakers.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

By the way, through the web, anyone can open content that may be blocked on a Smart Display by Digital Wellbeing settings or for a child's account. Your Smart Display blocks the web by default if:

  • A child's account is linked to it.
  • You turn on content filters in Digital Wellbeing settings, like answers or video filters.
  • You don't allow websites.

At any time, you can choose to allow websites in Digital Wellbeing settings.

In Digital Wellbeing settings, you can allow websites if:

  • Digital Wellbeing filters are turned on.
  • A supervised account for a child under 13, or the applicable age in your country, is linked to your Smart Display.

To allow websites in Digital Wellbeing:

  1. On your phone or tablet, open the Google Home app.
  2. At the bottom, tap Home > Settings > Digital Wellbeing.
  3. Select your Smart Display.
  4. Tap Additional controls.
  5. Under "Websites," tap Allow websites > Save.

Tip: If you don’t find these settings, update your Google Home app. Learn how to update the app.

Best,

Dan

I have done all of the above with no success.

I do have multiple child accounts connected, but I also have setup Digital Wellbeing filters with Websites enabled for all users on the various displays. I have tried deleting the filter and then adding it back with no success.

This appears to be a bug with how filtering works.

It is very frustrating since it now limits how the displays through out the house work.

I did some testing with various settings and determined that the issue is that if Videos settings for the Digital Wellbeing filter is set to Only allow filtered videos, then websites are restricted even if the page has no video at all and Additional  controls is set to Allow websites.

This appears to be a bug, a filter on videos shouldn't block every single web page.

Hi rdq,

Appreciate the update. You can also check the music service settings you use and check its filter status.

Also, we can factory reset your Nest Hub 2nd Gen to revert it back to its original settings — setting it up is needed. Follow the steps below.

  1. On the back of Nest Hub, press and hold both volume buttons together for about 10 seconds.
  2. Your Nest Hub will let you know that it's resetting.

It would be best to re-install the Google Home app if there are no other devices linked to it for a fresh start.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Dan

This issue affects even displays that I just set up. It would be good to get some clarification if this behavior is actually by design or a bug.

Does Only allow filtered videos, purposely stop access to websites?

Hey rdq,

Chiming in, are there other features affected like playing music, watching video or movies on YouTube or Netflix? Could you tell us the specific command that you are saying?

Cheers,

Muddi

An example command is:

"hey Google display google.com"

If "Only allow filtered videos" is selected for the digital well-being filter for the device, the warning is displayed that websites cannot be displayed is shown.

It seems as though any video filtering causes the display to restrict the display of websites even though displaying of website has been specifically allowed.

I have not noticed any other issues.

Hi rdq,

Is your Digital Wellbeing currently turned on? Have you already tried to turn it off and see if there's any difference on the results?

Best,

Princess

I have digital well being turned on since that is the only way to allow websites to be displayed.

Per the device documentation online, the default behavior is to restrict the display of websites unless you have a digital well being filter that allows websites.

It would appear the issue is that if you restrict videos the behavior is to also prevent any website from being displayed.

Hi rdq,

Got it. Could you fill out this form and let me know once you’re done? Could you also help us with the firmware version of your Nest Mini?  See the steps below on how to get it.

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app .
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. At the top right, tap Settings and then Device information.
  5. Under "Technical information," find Cast firmware: X.XXX.XXXXX.

Thanks,

Juni
