Nest Mini v1 won't activate, even after factory reset

agweber

There have been other similar threads, but they're all closed so I can't respond to them. I have many of these nest mini speakers that have been awesome. However, one that's been offline for many a month will not finish speaker setup to get it onto the wi-fi. I've tried a factory reset (tiny very well hidden button on the back that you have to hold in for 10-15 seconds), but it still brings me to a device must be activated page in the Google Home app. I've also tried updating the home app, thinking maybe there was a bug that's been fixed, but that didn't work either. Any help would be appreciated.

I only have the one android phone to test from. Other hits on this site mentioned initializing from a different device, but I only have my Pixel phone and a PC.

Man, I am having the same issue! Like, why do we have to go to this page that doesn't give us the extra steps? 🫤

Hi everyone,

Thanks for reaching out.

We apologize if this thread was closed sooner than you would have liked. As Community Specialists, we occasionally do a bit of housekeeping to keep the conversations in our community fresh and relevant. This includes locking threads after a period of inactivity.

Regarding this, we'd like to get your device's cast firmware version so we can forward this to the team. Lastly, here's the official post of the Community related to this thread.

Feels like I'm going in circles. I've visited that help page numerous times, which sends me back here. Only now did I realize that I could then start up a chat with support. They ran me through some of the same debugging steps, including asking if I could try setting up the device from a different phone, which I could not.

There is a serial number on the back of the device that's *INCREDIBLY* hard to read, but with a lot of light and careful focus and zoom on my camera I was able to read it that way. Curiously, the serial on this device doesn't follow the standard 14 alphanumeric pattern as the other units that I have that are still working, which I confirmed I had correctly read by looking through my Google Store order history. I wonder if that's common in other people's cases of malfunctioning units.

I'm not sure about how one acquires the firmware version of the device if we can't communicate with it.

Support is replacing the defunct unit.

Hi agweber,

Thanks for responding. By any chance, do you still have with you the case ID of that interaction?

Yes, I have received the replacement after talking to support about the issue. That solves the issue for me, hopefully the information about the mismatched serial might help out others in the future that run into this same issue since it's very apparent this issue isn't a one off.

I have the same issue. I have rezet mini 20 times, rebooted network, everything. Final config always fails for mini. Other mini worked fine. Thanks

So... Contacting support to get a replacement is the solution to this issue?

Yeah. Just got on with chat support and explained the situation. They checked that I ran through all the same debugging techniques and didn't have anything further so they simply replaced the faulty device.
