Nest + ersatz hub speaker

Hi all,

I have a Nest Wifi set-up with a hub in the living room and two nest points in the bedrooms. The wifi points are speakers, so we've synced Spotify music in the bedrooms, but I'd love to have the same music playing from the speaker I have in the living room too (an Ultimate Ears Megaboom 3 bluetooth speaker). I already received some nice explanations for why this isn't possible (especially from @Jeff😞

https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Speakers-and-Displays/Nest-Wifi-UE-Megaboom-sync-up/m-p/13783...

...but I realized I should've asked an additional question:

if connecting to that Megaboom won't work, can any of you think of an alternative set-up to have music in the living room near the hub?  Is the only solution to just get a third Nest point?   (Ideally, I'd want something portable and waterproof like the Megaboom for maximum versatility - someone told me JBLs can be connected into a Nest mesh, but I assume I'd run just into the same issue as with the Megaboom?)

I'd appreciate any thoughts, thanks!

Hey mdini,

Sorry for the delays. To answer your question, unlike JBL speakers the Nest WiFi speaker has the capability to broadcast network. Also, Nest WiFi points have a speaker with the Google Assistant, so you can play music, manage your WiFi network, find answers, control your connected devices, and more using just your voice. You can visit this link for more information.

You can create a speaker group that includes your Nest WiFi speaker + JBL. Make sure it is cast-enabled so you can play music together with your Nest WiFi speakers. Please go to this link to learn more about speaker group.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hey mdini,

Great question! Adding a new Nest WiFi will do or any of our Google Home/Nest devices. However, our speakers are not waterproof but have great features that you can find on this link. You can also buy speakers with cast-enabled features and include it on speaker group to play synchronous music in your home. Click here for more information.

Hope this helps.

thanks, Muddi!  Some thoughts below:

**Thanks, so this idea is advocating the option I mentioned of just buying a third Nest (or some other Google speaker equivalent) - not my ideal, but this could work, thanks.

**cool, so THIS is getting close to what I was wondering about - this could be a cast-enabled speaker from ANY brand, right?  I did some reading and it seems this is the issue with the UE Megaboom speaker, whereas JBLs apparently are Chromecast enabled.  And, just to be sure, I would be able to include a JBP speaker as an additional (i.e. third) speaker in my network, it wouldn't replace one of my Nest speakers?  (The only way I could get the Megaboom to be included in the network was to have it replace one of the Nest points.)

Thanks for the help!

Hey mdini,

The JBL speaker wouldn't replace the Nest WiFi because the third-party speaker doesn't have the capability to broadcast or extend your network.

thanks - but just to be totally sure, could you please answer the question from Thursday above: the JBL can't act as a wifi extender, but it can act as a mesh speaker, without having to replace one of the existing Point speakers?  i.e. I can set it up so all three speakers are playing the same music (2x Points + 1x JBL)?

(I just want to be sure before I waste money, thanks!)

thanks, Muddi!

Sorry, I wasn't clear - the first paragraph is all information I already knew, but the second paragraph is exactly what I was trying to check, thanks.   I appreciate it!

thanks, good point, but I don't really care about the extension capability in this case, since I'm just trying to have a speaker near the main Hub that will play the same music as the Point speakers, but without replacing one of them (i.e., I want three speakers playing the same music, not just the two Points or one Point + one JBL).
