Nest mini not seeing Chromecast Audio

Navrig
Community Member

We, previously, had a Nest Mini in the kitchen which, when instructed verbally, would direct Spotify music to a Chromecast audio connected to an amp and speakers also in the kitchen.  Basically, "Hey Google, play music on Kitchen Speaker".

The Nest Mini belonged to my daughter who took it with her when she moved out - she also "owned" the Home under Google Home.  I bought a replacement and left the original Home creating a new one (different name too) under my control.  My daughter left her Home thus deleting it.

I then factory reset the Chromecast Audio and setup the Nest Mini - both on the same network.

However the Nest Mini can't see the Chromecast Audio and says it doesn't understand when I instruct music to be played on Kitchen Speaker.  I've checked the properties of both and they are on the same network and in the same room.

I can play music on Kitchen Speaker by manually selecting it in Spotify.

Any suggestions how to fix this?

Is this linked to the Sonos legal win over patent infringement by Google?

Hi Navrig,

That certainly hasn’t been easy for you ― let’s check it out. A few questions: have you also tried the factory reset on your Nest Mini? Was it the same steps as what you see in this link

It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router followed by your Nest speakers then your Chromecast..
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes tops.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.
  4. Ensure all devices are on either the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. They can not see each other when separated.
  5. Ensure they are on the same account.

Once done, let’s set your Chromecast Audio as the preferred device for media playback:

  1. Ensure your mobile device or tablet is linked to the same account as your Chromecast or speaker.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. At the top right, tap Settings  and then Audio, then:
  • To choose the TV or speaker you want to use when you play music, tap Default music speaker.
  • To choose your preferred TV, tap Default TV.

Complete the steps and tell me how it goes.

Best,

Dan

I have not had time to read, in detail, your suggestions.  However 2 points to note:

1.  The Mini Nest was brand new out of the box so I am not sure about the need to factory reset.

2.  I don't want the Chromecast audio as the default for music/sound.  The Nest Mini is the default radio which is used most often during the day.  The Chromecast audio is connected to a beefy amplifier and speakers and is only used when we want some loud(er) sounds.

Hi Navrig,

We really want your Nest Mini back on track. Resetting your device to default is the next best step. Give it a try! Here’s how.

But before doing the reset, may I ask what are you trying to do here? Are you trying to set Nest Mini and Chromecast Audio on a speaker group? Do you see both on your Google Home app?

Looking forward to your response so that we can isolate further.

Thanks,

Dan

I am trying to use the Nest Mini to direct music to the Kitchen Speakers.

That is "hey Google, play music on Kitchen Speakers".

Both the Nest Mini and Kitchen speakers are visible on Google Home and both are connected to the same network.

When given this command the Nest Mini says "I do not understand".

Kitchen Speakers can be chosen manually from Spotify so they are recognised by Home and work.

Hey there Navrig,

Apologies for the delayed response. For confirmation, what is the Nest speaker on your kitchen? Is it also a Nest Mini? The message “I do not understand” only happens when giving command via voice, right? Are they in a speaker group?

Let’s check this out ― follow the steps below to add a device to playback:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap Media . You’ll find a controller for the content that’s playing. The controller will show compatible devices linked to your account or Wi-Fi network.
  3. Tap the device you want to add. Audio will begin to play in sync on any devices selected.

Keep me posted.

Dan
