I have bought a nest speaker, thinking I was buying a bluetooth speaker - lo and behold it is quite a different beast and I have no idea how to make it work for my needs - ie listening to things I have chosen on my iphone on a speaker. The speaker doesn't appear in my list of bluetooth devices on my phone. The little dial seems to be whirring as though it is seeking another decie in the vicinity .. but I don't know what to do to link the bluetooth function between the iphone and the new nest speaker.
I use these sources:
Spotify
BBC sounds app
Podcast app
I have followed the installation process and can get Spotify if I talk to the speaker, though I haven't mastered how to tell it to choose from my play lists yet.
I have literally no idea - please help if you can!

We only access our Nest Mini and Nest Hubs through Wi-Fi. Perhaps this will be of some help:

Google Nest's reply on this post says "Using your Google Home Mini as a Bluetooth mic is not yet supported."

I will go and study the first link you sent.
Thanks, but I don't want to use it as a mike I want to use it as a speaker - to amplify the things I select on my iphone.
I don't even know what you mean by saying you "only access your nest through wi-fi".
I have followed the installation process and got the wifi connection made.
I can get some spotify to play (when I ask google to play a tune) but that's no use for the BBC sounds or the Podcast app.

We can stream BBC radio on our Nest Mini just by saying "Hey Google, plan Radio One".
There is this Google Nest Help topic on podcasts:

There is this BBC post on BBC Sounds:
