Random "can't be done on this device" message

Dgmc440

A similar situation has been reported https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Speakers-and-Displays/Google-Home-setting-alarm/m-p/390040/em...

with some users having exactly the same experience as I am. Namely, I say "hey google, good morning"; it replies, tells me the weather, then says "sorry that can’t be done on this device, have a wonderful day" and then plays the news. This happens on all Google Home devices in my house. Renaming and rebooting does not help.

The exact nature of the message can be heard here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uic2qdQAq8UUlOAZyYMUbYYNDQcNF0oH/view?usp=share_link

Incidentally, the required labels on the post are irrelevant but I had to enter something.

Hi Dgmc440,

Thanks for bringing this up.

Have you already tried the steps posted from the previous thread? Also, could you please list down all the Google Nest speakers set up in your network and their cast firmware versions?

To check which firmware version you're on, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. At the top right, tap Settings and then Device information.
  5. Under "Technical information," find Cast firmware: X.XXX.XXXXX.

Looking forward to your response.

Best,

Princess

Yes. Renaming, rebooting, changing language. Nothing worked. Just the apology in a different accent! Cast firmware versions:

Nest hub. 1.67.330920

H2E. 1.56.315675

H2E. 1.56.315675

Home.  1.56.324896

Mini. 1.56.324896

I also have an H2D Router.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for your help here, Juni and @pcent

@Dgmc440, while waiting for one of our specialists to reach out to you, would you mind trying out the suggestion given by pcent? Let's see if that would help resolve your concern.

Thanks,

This did work and I was almost there anyway thanks to a response from the specialists. I was not familiar with the Routines setup and, sure enough, there was a setting to 'tell if my phone battery is low' which only works with Android phones. Switch it off and all is well. Lovely M and fellow Community Specialists should add this to your initial troubleshooting checklist, rather than messing around with languages and renaming devices. For anyone still unclear: go to the Google Home app; click on 'Routines' (one of seven buttons on the top of the main page); scroll down to 'Personal routines'; select 'Bedtime' or, in my case 'Good Morning'; scroll down and click on 'Tell me if my phone battery is low'; click on 'remove action;' at the bottom of the page; click 'Save' at the bottom right. Why this became a default setting is anyone's guess.

I had this exact same issue. Had google home and used “good morning” for years. This message started appearing daily a few months back.

Figured it out. Under the “good morning” automation, it had a “check battery level” action, which mentions it only works with android devices. I am an iPhone user, but unsure if it’s trying to check the battery of the device it’s being triggered on (an old google nest hub), or my personal device where I am editing this setting (iPhone). Either way, when I removed this (and the reminders action I don’t use), and it stopped giving me the message. Hope this helps!
