Setup Nest Audio

Weird problem, this....

So I have a pair of Nest Audio speakers in my living room. Works fine on my account, no issue.

However, when my wife tries to set a reminder on this pair, it tells her to enable it on her device. We go in the settings of the pair in the Home app and it says to setup will be finished when the devices are on the same network, which they are. Press Finish Setup, and it never completes.

The same issue happens on the tablet we share, my account is fine but when we sign into hers, same again.

But she CAN set reminders on all the Nest displays we have in the house, so no idea why the pair are different!

Help! It's driving me nuts.

Exactly what cost me weeks of search and research and even more nerves!

I only can add voice match of my wife to the speakers, when granting here admin privileges as a member! Then she has to remove the speakers and add them again. There she will be able to transfer her voice match to the speakers and almost everything works fine. Problem now: as soon as she seems fully integrated into my home she can not use Yeelight scenes anymore. It's like all Yeelight scenes are missing the belonging devices for here. She can command every single Yeelight device, but not it's scenes. Most crazy thing: even my guests without any privileges in my home can command scenes! As soon as i remove my wife from home or add here as a normal member (she can not remove or add devices then) she isn't able to voice match anymore, but can command Yeelight scenes again. What a mess!

At least you answered one of my other questions. I'm struggling with 10 Xiaomi smart speakers - no matter if paired as stereo or as single device - it seems you're using Nest audio, so it's more a Google Home thing, as i'm quite sure i would be handed over to Xiaomi support without any chance of solutions...

Hi everyone,

Thank you for reaching out to the Google Nest Community. I'm sorry to hear your wife is getting a network error when setting a reminder from her Google Home app to your Nest Audio speaker. I'm glad to help you get this resolved.

To determine the most effective troubleshooting plan, could you please answer the following questions:

  • When did the issue start?
  • Did your wife have access to the Nest Audio to set reminders before?
  • Do you have multiple Home Structures set up in your Google Home app?
  • Are there other family members who can access the speaker?

We look forward to your response so we can resolve this.

Regards,

Gabriela

Hola Gabriela,

after another countless hours of try & error with pre-recorded voice commands of my wife and endless firmware resets or removing and adding devices to my home i finally seem to have some valid conclusions.

First to answer your questions:

  • the issue was present since day one, when i tried to add her for the very first time (we are talking about 1-2 years)
  • access to her personal stuff was always hit or miss
  • not having multiple home setups anymore, but she still has one ghost device in "voice match settings" > "other devices" located in "root" (nowadays every home seems to have it's own entry where the voice matched devices are shown). i tried everything to delete this old device, but it's nowhere possible (even tried old google home app versions and so on)
  • there are no other family members

Now i'm going to share my latest investigations, which lead to partly success (at least all my speakers have voice match for both of us now!). Maybe it's helpful to others, here are my steps. Once again, it's only possible when the new home member gets admin privileges granted! Only then the new member is able to remove and add devices, so setup of speakers starts again and voice match will be linked. If your member doesn't have admin privileges then speakers just get added, but voice match and personal information aren't linked to the speakers (only a new setup with the belonging account will link voice match and personal information). To me it's a big bug in general conception of adding voice match to smart speakers.

To make things a little bit more complicated i'm linking all my devices to static ips, which usually shouls help keeping network administration a bit cleaner...

  1. It's recommended to have voice match already enabled and trained on smart phone for all future members of your home (i guess it's also possible during the setup process of first speaker, but what's done is done...).
  2. Factory reset speaker and add it to your home (going through the setup process with your first admin account). After that, first voice match and personal information is linked to that speaker.
  3. Restart device! I noticed that on initial startup the speaker got a random ip address (obviously random mac first). The speaker now has it's static ip address and every setting (like public preview for firmware, personal information and voice match) got saved as expected.
  4. Use your second home member account (with admin privileges!) and remove the device from home.
  5. Add the device as second member to your home (the setup process starts again and voice match of second account gets linked to that speaker).
  6. Restart device (this is where i almost spent a lifetime to find out!). The setup assistant suggest the setup process is successfully finished, but it isn't. Voice match and personal information are only getting completely linked and supported for the second account after that restart.
  7. Check with first account if all settings are properly stored.
  8. Now you can continue to pair devices as stereo if you want. I managed to go through this procedure using 10 speakers - 8 paired to stereo devices.

I hope i didn't miss a step, as i really spent hours and hours on this and sometimes lost my mind fiddling around. All this restarting reminds me on the late 90s early 00s... It really seems to be necessary for finalizing the linking of voice match and personal information profiles. Usually i didn't restart after setup assistant was successfully finished and i was wondering why one account couldn't access shopping list or not getting answered with it's preferred voice.

Sharing automations with ambiente options (3rd party scenes) included - that's a totally different story! In my case i'm trying to add Yeelight scenes for both home members. Even with the latest revamped version of Google Home app there is no way getting it working with just one account linked to the 3rd party account!

Let's say having member A linked to 3rd party Yeelight account and creating an home automation with Yeelight ambient scene included. The automation gets shared to member B who can access it, but the Yeelight ambient scene is missing in it, as 3rd party Yeelight account is not linked to Google Home account of member B! Linking that 3rd party Yeelight account to Google Home account of member B too, leads to the circumstance that whoever of the two members is saving the automation with Yeelight ambient scene included can run the automation. The other members Google Home automation (which should be exactly identical, as it's a shared one) the Yeelight ambient scene gets deleted! So sharing of 3rd party ambient scenes (at least tested with Yeelight for now) doesn't work - the new automation editor doesn't support 3rd party ambient scenes anyways and the old ones show the before mentioned behavior.

To make things even more complicated once again I tried the following. Sharing the Yeelight devices and scenes from Yeelight account of member A to a new Yeelight account of member B. Linking Yeelight account of member A to it's Google Home account and Yeelight account of member B to Google Home account of member B. When sharing home automation with Yeelight ambient scene, i still get the same result as before. The account that saves the home automation can run it, the other account the Yeelight ambient scene gets deleted - although this scene is now linked to two different 3rd party Yeelight accounts!

The only working way i found for now: creating personal automations for both members that include Yeelight ambient scenes linked to their own 3rd party Yeelight accounts!

Btw. almost forgot to mention the most "funny" thing out of it all: my guests, of course not part of my home and therefor without any account or voice match on my smart speakers can voice control my automations with Yeelight ambient scenes without any problems. Sounds absolutely logical to me *not*!

Google, there's a looooong way to go!!! 😞

Hi Gabriela,

In answer to your questions...

  • It may have been when a new router was installed and all devices had to be connected to it.
  • She was able to set reminders before.
  • We have the problematic pair of homes in the living room, we have two Google display hubs which are independent of each other (no problem on these at all) and the Pixel Tablet, which shows the same thing as her phone on her account (but not on mine).
  • It's only me and her who are in our home group, no-one one else.

Hope that helps.
