Some Nest Minis with a Chromecast Audio for default speaker won't play any radio stations

I have 16 Google Home devices all connected to the same WiFi network. Among these are 4 Home Minis all of which have a Chromecast Audio set as their default music speaker in the Google Home app on my phone.

Recently two of these no longer play radio stations but will play music from spotify. e.g.

  • I say "play BBC radio 4" the mini says "streaming BBC Radio 4 from the BBC" then nothing.
  • I say "play NPR" the mini says "streaming WNYC from TuneIn" then nothing.
  • I say "play my playlist Release Radar" the mini says "Got it! Playing the Spotify playlist Release Radar on bedroom audio" and this plays on my Chromecast Audio (named bedroom audio).
  • I say "play BBC radio 4 on bedroom audio" the mini says "streaming BBC Radio 4 from the BBC" then nothing.

If I reset the default music speaker to the mini they will play radio but as soon as I set the default back to the Chromecast audio radio stops working. The other 2 minis still seem to work fine with this setup. I can cast directly from radio apps on my phone (BBC Sounds, TuneIn, etc.) to the Chromecast Audio devices. I notice the minis that won't play radio to chromecast audio have a newer firmware version than the ones which work. Is this a firmware bug?

Not working:

  • Home Mini:
  • System firmware version: 384934

  • Cast firmware: 2.58.384934
  • Chromecast Audio:
  • Cast firmware version: 1.56.281627

Working:

  • Home Mini:
  • System firmware version: 375114

  • Cast firmware: 2.57.375114
  • Chromecast Audio:
  • Cast firmware version: 1.56.281627

Well, as of last week radio with audio as default speaker started to work again. No changes in firmware versions - perhaps a server side issue was fixed - I have no clue!
