Speaker Groups Not Working for Music

Maattt
Community Member

Anyone else having problems with speaker groups? I have 2 minus and 3 big google speakers. I can stream music to one just fine, but streaming to multiple speakers results in stuttering or completely unresponsive devices.  Music starts and stops randomly.  Streaming music to multiple speakers used to work fine.

I've tried:

  • Restarting devices
  • Restarting router
  • Ensuring all devices are on same 2.4 GHz network
  • Trying YouTube Music instead of Spotify
  • Deleting and remaking groups
  • Lowering music quality

Hello Maattt,

Thank you so much for posting in this community. I’m sorry to know that your speaker groups are not working as you expected to play music. However, it works when you stream music to one speaker. Don’t worry; I’m happy to help you.

I appreciate your effort and time in completing the troubleshooting steps described in this post. To assist you further, please verify the firmware version of your speakers. To check this information and ensure your devices are up to date, refer to this article: Google speaker and display firmware versions and release notes.

I'll be looking forward to hearing back.

Regards,

Daniel

Hi Maattt,

Thank you for getting back to me. I appreciate the information provided. To continue getting to the root of the issue, could you please help me by answering these questions?

  • Does the issue occur when casting music via voice command?

  • What is the default music service provider in the Google Home app?

  • Does another music service provider work without any issues?

  • What is the behavior of the group if all devices are set up in a 5 GHz network?

  • When did the issue start?

  • Did you change something on the setup, network, or account around the time the issue started?

  • Did you include non-Google speakers in the group? Additionally, have any displays been added to the group as well?

I’ll be waiting for your response.

Best regards,

Daniel

Hi Danie,

Thanks for your continued troubleshooting.  Here are the answers to your questions:

  • The voice command "play music on home group" does not work. It only plays on the one device.
  • Default music provider is Spotify.
  • Youtube Music has the same issue.
  • I will try to find a quick way to check 5 Ghz. Otherwise I would have to reset each device and reconnect to a 5 Ghz network.
  • The issue started about two months ago.
  • I recently moved apartments and added additional google devices (one nest audio and one nest mini) to the setup.  However, my ISP and router and network settings are the exact same as before.  I have tested internet speeds and wifi network strength in each room and everything seems fine.
  • There are no non-google speakers or displays in the group.

Thanks!

As of now responsiveness and music playback on the group has improved.  I have a Verizon router with a special 2.4GHz "IOT" network.  All google devices are on the IOT network.  It looks like speeds were weaker on the IOT network than on my primary network, and that the default channel for the IOT Network had poor "health."  I switched to a different 2.4GHz channel and the google devices are doing much better.

tl;dr changing network channel seemed to improve google home responsiveness, possibly due to other device interference.

Here the same problem. The voice command "play music on home group" does not work. It only plays on the one device.

Weirdly enough this part fixed itself.  Try deleting the group, making it again, and then wait ~24 hours.  That's what got the "play music on home group" to work for me.
