Unable to ask Google to play music. Started with Spotify not playing, now it won’t play music from other sources. This happens on all our Google devices, Audio, Mini, Display, and WiFi Speaker.

Hello Riki Roe and User 10373543467270222191,

Thank you for reaching out. I am sorry that your Spotify is not working with your Google Home devices. I use my Spotify daily so I understand your frustration. I appreciate you taking the time to troubleshoot.

Unfortunately, at this moment, this is an emerging issue of Spotify having issues with Google Nest and Home devices. Our team is aware of this situation and are working on getting this issue resolved.

In the meantime, I recommend you casting your music from Spotify.
To cast from a mobile device, you will go to the bottom right of your screen of your Spotify App. You will see a desktop screen and speaker icon next to each other. Once you click on it, it will show which device you are listening to Spotify on. Below that will be a list of devices you can select to transfer your music to. Your speaker should be on the list. This is what I usually do when I use Spotify and haven't had any issues.

I apologize for the inconvenience. Please feel free to reach out with any other questions or concerns. Thanks!

Thanks for responding. Unfortunately the issue isn’t just with Spotify but also TuneIn, Global Radio, and also happens with Google’s own curated ambient playlists. If it does play straight away from any of these platforms, it will play for a short time and stop. Could be 5 mins, could be an hour.

Playing from Spotify directly and selecting a speaker to cast to doesn’t work all the time. The connection with the speaker occurs as it makes the sound to confirm, it may play 1 second of a song then stop. Opening the Google Home App shows it understands it was trying to play from Spotify but hitting the play button will again play 1 second. The same occurs in the Spotify app too.

Switching to playing streaming radio stations from various platforms has the same outcome. Plays 1 second then stops. Oddly you can see it was trying to play whatever was current on that station as it lost the song or DJ presenter.

Google’s ambient playlist are supposed to play for 12 hours if uninterrupted however this again lasts for a few minutes at best before stopping, if I can get it to play at all. I’ve tried saying the command, or typing the command into the Google Home app with the speaker. I use the ambient playlists on the speaker in my sons nursery when he is sleeping for background noise so it’s frustrating it doesn’t even work with Google.

I frequently reboot all speakers to try to resolve but it has the same result.

Hi Riki Roe,

Wow! That is very frustrating! I am so sorry to hear that your device is not playing any type of media.

Could you please try to do Factory Data Reset on your device? Are there any improvements?

  • A factory reset will reset your Google Nest or Home speaker or display to its default factory settings.
  • Note: This action will clear your data from the device and can't be undone.

I apologize for the inconvenience caused by this issue. Let's get this issue resolved as soon as possible!
