Speakers suddenly quiet until I toggle mic

PGould1
Community Member

I have two pairs of nest speakers,  a pair of Google Home 1st gen in my office and a pair of Nest Audio speakers in my living room. I use both as stereo pairs. On July 16, 2024, I tried to stream music on the Nest pair and it seemed like nothing was happening. I tried several platforms (Spotify, TuneIn) and had the same issue. I finally noticed that the music was just playing very quietly no matter how much I turned it up. I went out to my office and it was the same on the other pair of speakers! I finally found that if I turn the mic off and back on then it will play at regular volume but I need to do it each time I start a stream. This is crazy! I can only guess it was do to a software update that hit both pairs at the same time. Any ideas?!

@JillG the issue seems related to the 'start sound' and 'stop sound'. If I go in the Home app to Speakers > Settings > Accessibility > Start Sound, Stop Sound and turn the sounds off then the speakers seem to operate correctly. It's not quite that simple because I have to toggle the mic button again before the speakers work correctly with the start, stop sounds turned off.

Thank you again for submitting feedback, it appears the team got all they needed and are actively working on a fix. We're hoping that it will rollout soon, but in the meantime they suggested a workaround (which it looks like you already discovered).

In the Google Home app, select your device and navigate to its Settings > Accessibility and then disable "Play end sound." This should stop the bug from happening.

Thank you again for the patience, I'll be back to confirm when a fix is rolling out.

HI @PGould1

That is strange! Does it only happen when playing through pairs? How about individually? Try rebooting the devices and if that doesn't help, a full reset may. Let us know how it goes.

@JillG  I tried rebooting several times and it didn't help. I did a factory reset and it worked ... at first. After restarting a stream it went back to being very quiet unless I mute the mic and unmute it.

Thanks for trying that @PGould1 . I'm going to check with the Community Specialists and see if they have any known issues like this.

Can you make sure your Google Home app and whatever music apps you use are current and updated? Clear those apps' caches as well.

Hi again!

Update from the Google Team and no currently known issues like you are having.

They have suggested checking the Continued Conversation mode as in this article:Have a conversation with your speaker or display - Google Nest Help

The devices seem to turn off the volume and it returns to normal when the mic is turned off. There's a possibility these devices could be in continued conversation mode, so disabling it might help determine if it's related.

Hi @JillG continuous conversation mode was not on. I toggled it and it behaves differently. The lights on the speaker stay on. The problem I'm having is that the speaker responds and starts music but it's very quiet and won't turn up louder.

I have exactly the same issue!

Mic-switch off and on temporary fix the problem until the next time i stream something.

Reset the hole setup, everything works as it should until I make a stereopair.

There's definitely a bug somewhere.

Thanks for trying @PGould1 and sorry to hear @Psandi67 has joined the part of this issue.

I'm going to re-escalate this thread and let the team know. Please, if you can, recreate the issue and immediately send feedback either via the Google Home app or via voice on your speaker by saying "share feedback" and recording the message. That will help the specialists.

THANKS!

I've disable the start/stop sound and streaming works as it should be😀

The strange thing is that sometimes it works fine, even with the start/stop sound on.

@PGould1, thanks for the start/stop tip👍🏻

Hey there,

**Edited 8/8 - Removing the feedback instructions. Thank you to everyone who submitted, the team got all that they needed!

Thank you!

@kelanfromgoogle I just sent feedback from my Google home pair, 1st gen. I also have a nest pair with the same issue. More specifically, I can avoid the issue if I turn off the 'play end sound' setting for the pair. In other words, if play end sound is turned on, my music only plays very quietly. I can fix it by toggling the mic. If I keep play end sound turned off, the pair plays music normally. Let me know if you need more feedback from my device.

I have the same issue, it started a few weeks ago and happens on all my speakers (mini and nest), sometimes it’s ok, others they all play quiet (it’s random)… rebooting sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t.

We are also having this issue with our 3 google nest speakers that we use to play music in our showroom.

We are having this issue, specifically with Google hubs and nest WiFi device in a grouping. Thing is that start and end sounds have long been disabled. When playing music on the devices individually (instead of in the group) they seem to work.

I’ve turned off the Sound End Sound, but I am still intermittently getting the same issue. I have to toggle the mic off and back on to get sound each time I want to play radio or music
