Spotify Issues

I’ve had a Spotify ‘Basic Subscription’ since it was introduced (I don’t listen to audio books so I’ve not bothered changing plan) but as of the past few months my Google Nest keeps telling me I need a premium subscription to play specific songs/albums/playlists. The Basic is £10.99 a month so this isn’t the free version.

I’ve even checked with DeepSeek AI and that comes back saying it’s a fault with Google’s assistant reading the word ‘Basic’ and misinterpreting it as a non-premium plan when I pay for a subscription.

Does anyone else on the Spotify ‘Basic Subscription’ have this issue?

Hi JackWPJ94,

Thank you for reaching out to our community.

I understand that over the past few months, your Google Nest device has not been recognizing your Spotify Basic plan as a paid subscription, instead requesting a Premium subscription to play specific songs, albums, or playlists. I’m happy to help you with this.

To help me investigate and provide more tailored assistance, could you please answer the following questions?

  • What is the model of your Google Nest device? Here is a Google Help Center article that can help you to identify your device: Google Nest and Home device specifications
  • Are you using the latest version of the Google Home app? If not, you can check this Google Help Center article to learn more: how to update the Google Home app.
  • What’s the firmware version of your Google Nest device? You can use this Google Help Center article as a reference: Find your device’s firmware version.
  • Is your smartphone’s operating system up to date?
  • What country are you located in?
  • Are you able to play your Spotify music on other devices without being prompted for a Premium subscription?

While I wait for those details, I recommend unlinking and relinking your Spotify account. This forces the Google Home app to refresh your subscription status and recognize the Spotify Basic plan correctly. To ensure the process is effective, please follow these steps:

Step 1: Unlink Spotify

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap your account icon in the top right.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Under Services, tap Music.
  5. Find Spotify in the list and tap Unlink.

Step 2: Link Spotify

  1. Ensure your mobile device is on the same Wi-Fi network as your speaker. Please check these Google Nest Help Center articles: Check that your devices are on the same Wi-Fi network and Check which Google Account is linked to a speaker or display
  2. In the Google Home app, tap your Profile picture then verify the correct Google Account is active then Close.
    1. If you need to switch accounts, tap the drop down icon, then select another account or Add another account.
  3. Tap Home settings, then select Music under Services.
  4. Tap Spotify to use as your default music service. Your voice assistant will use this service when you say “Hey Google, play music.”
  5. To connect the account, tap Spotify, then select Link Account, sign in or sign up for the service and follow the in-app steps.

Step 3: Reboot your Google Nest device

  1. Unplug the power cord from your speaker or display.
  2. Leave it unplugged for one minute.
  3. Plug the power cord back in.

Please let me know how it goes! Once I have those details, we can proceed with more specific steps.

Best regards,

Virna
