Spotify Premium not recognized on Google Home

msampson

We recently switched to Spotify Premium and our Google Home won't acknowledge the update. Each time we ask it to play a specific song we get the "choosing songs is only available to Spotify Premium members..."

I've gone through resetting the home, unlinking and relinking the service, rebooting all devices, etc. Nothing posted on the board at this time seems to help the Home recognize the service. The services>music area even shows "Spotify Premium subscription active".

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi msampson,

Thanks for posting in the community!

I'm so sorry to hear that your Spotify premium account is not being recognized by your Google Home app. No worries; I'm here to help! As the first step, we'll unlink and then relink your account. Please follow the next steps:

  • Open up the Google Home app.
  • Click the settings icon in the upper middle section on the right side.
  • Under 'Services', click Music.
  • It will pull up your music in a list format, and you can click on 'unlink' in the Spotify section.
  • Then, reconnect and log in to your Spotify account.

Let me know how it goes. If you have more questions for me, feel free to reply to this post. I'll be happy to assist further.

Best regards,

Nery.

Hi Nery!

Thanks for your assistance.  I followed these steps and the Google home device still doesn't recognize the Spotify Premium account.

The Home app is showing the Spotify account as linked and an active Premium subscription - but the Home device still doesn't recognize a voice command to play a specific song, giving the "this is for Spotify Premium members only..." response.

Any other suggestions?  Thanks!

Hi msampson,

Thanks for the update and trying those troubleshooting steps!

Here are more steps we can try that might solve this situation:

  • Try to use your Google assistant through the Google Home app and check if the error message persists.
  • Reboot your cellphone
  • Check if there is an update available for the Google Home app and Spotify

I hope this helps!. If you have more questions for me, feel free to reply to this post. I'll be happy to assist further.

Best regards,

Nery.

Hi Nery,

Unfortunately, none of those steps worked either.  But something did work...

We had muliple Spotify accounts linked to the Home, one that was a premium subscription and one that was the free service. When both accounts were linked to the Home device the premium account was not recognized. When I *delinked* and set *no default provider* in the music settings on the home app for the free Spotify account, then the Premium account was now recognized. It's not a great solution, but it works now.

Thanks for your help, Nery.
