Time Zone

Jderosha
Community Member

Technically i live in the central standard time zone however im right on the edge of eastern time zone. My entire town goes off of eastern time due to the large military presence and the base being in eastern time. When i have my correct address in my nest hub, it isnt the time zone i need. I need to be able to set the time zone my self.

Being able to set the time zone manually would also address another issue some customers have reported, where Google's database has assigned an incorrect time zone to the customer's address, and the customer simply can't get Google to correct its database--or even to acknowledge that its database is wrong.

Hey Jderosha,

Thanks for reaching out.

Manually setting up timezone isn't supported with Google Home or Google Nest devices. Your device will automatically detect what is set in your area based on your device and home address. Try checking your address if it's properly set on your Google Home and Google Assistant app.

Best,

Alex

Oh, for heavens sake, did you even read my comment, the one to which you replied?

The problem is that Google's database has assigned incorrect time zones for some customers' addresses, and the customers simply cannot get Google to correct its database--or even to acknowledge that its database is wrong.

It's not just you. Multiple Google Nest Support people seem to refuse to even understand the problem.

Google's address/timezone database has errors in it!!!!!

Hey Jderosha,

How's it going with your Google Nest Hub? If you're still experiencing the same issue, kindly provide us the cast firmware and software version of your device.

Thanks,

Alex

Hey Jderosha,

One quick final check in here since activity has slowed down. We'll be locking the thread in the next 24 hours, but if you still need assistance, feel free to start a new thread in the community and we’ll be happy to help.

Kind regards,

Alex

@Azarco

After you lock this thread, is Google Nest going to take any measures to correct errors where Google's own database has assigned incorrect time zones for some customers' addresses?

Since Google Nest does NOT provide customers with the ability to set their own time zones, it seems only reasonable that Google Nest should provide a method for correcting incorrect time zone assignments in its own database.

Yes, I am still having the same issue. The issue isn’t my address. Everything is set up properly. The issue is that the wrong time zone was assigned to my address incorrectly.

I'd like to ask the same question I asked @Azarco two weeks ago:

After you lock this thread, is Google Nest going to take any measures to correct errors where Google's own database has assigned incorrect time zones for some customers' addresses?

Since Google Nest does NOT provide customers with the ability to set their own time zones, it seems only reasonable that Google Nest should provide a method for correcting incorrect time zone assignments in its own database.

Hi MplsCustomer,

We apologize if this thread was closed sooner than you would have liked. As Community Specialists, we occasionally do a bit of housekeeping to keep the conversations in our community fresh and relevant. This includes locking threads after a period of inactivity. Regarding your concerns, if other users filled out the form, that's the time that we will continue working with them via email as there are other info that can't be disclosed publicly.

Best,

Princess

@Princesss

That's all well and good, but there are numerous posts from customers--like the original poster here--whose addresses are coded in Google's database with an incorrect time zone, and in all of these posts, Google's stance has been to refuse to even acknowledge that this is what is being reported.

Google has decided that Google knows the timezone for every address in the world, and when it gets it wrong, it pretends to not even understand the problem.

I am having the same issue - Nest Hub 2nd Gen displays Eastern time, but I'm in the Central time zone. All other devices show the correct time, but not the Nest Hub. Google Home is set to the proper address here in Henderson, Kentucky. I don't know if it's a database issue like MplsCustomer wrote, but it's definitely a problem that multiple people have posted in this community.

There don't seem to be any steps to correct the problem other than putting in a fake address to get the correct time, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having a device to show you local weather and news, no?

Hi SRWylie,

This is not the experience we want you to have; let us help you. A few questions: when did your issue begin? Were there any recent changes made? When you said other devices, do you mean other Nest devices that have the correct time zone?

It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first:

  1. Unplug the power cord from your router, followed by your Nest speakers.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

Also, your home and work locations are synced with the Google Maps settings on your mobile device. However, you can manually set these addresses.

If the issue persists, let’s revert your Nest Hub (2nd Gen) to its default settings by doing a factory reset. Here’s how:

  1. On the back of Nest Hub, press and hold both volume buttons together for about 10 seconds.
  2. Your Nest Hub will let you know that it's resetting.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Dan

Oh, Dan, bless your little ol' heart (said in my best Kentucky accent),

I have a whole thread about this same issue, where I've had discussions with @Muddi about my issue. I've done all of those things without success. As someone who has been in technology for over 40 years now, I think I know a thing or two about how to fix issues that arise. I sure hoped that Google developers would chime in. No fault of you "community specialists," but you aren't much more than a chatroom moderator. You can't actually fix anything, but you can make the contributor feel like they've done something wrong. Trust me - I know how systems should work. When they don't, it's definitely not because of something I've done.

Changing my home address to a known central time zone location fixed the time display, but didn't fix the actual problem. I don't want to get news and weather from a location 100 miles away. I want to get local information that is relevant to me. If I switch my location back to my actual home address, the weather and news are correct, but the time zone is not.

I'm so amazed that Google refuses to actually listen to its users when there's a problem. It makes me question why I even keep any of your products.

Steve

Hey SRWylie,

Apologies for the delay! Let’s try this — some steps may have been performed previously but make sure to try it again in this particular order:

  1. Open the Google Home app then tap on the Nest Hub (2nd gen) device card.
  2. Tap on the gear icon or "Device settings".
  3. Tap on "Remove device".
  4. Uninstall the Google Home app.
  5. Reboot the mobile device and Nest Hub (2nd gen) device.
  6. Reinstall the Google Home app.
  7. Perform a Factory Data Reset to the Nest Hub (2nd gen) device.
  8. Open the Google Home app and create a new home structure (make sure to add the current home address to the new home structure).
  9. Add/Setup the Nest Hub (2nd gen) to the new home structure.
  10. Check the time display.

Once done, replicate the issue, if the behavior is the same then do this with your Google Nest display: "Okay Google, submit feedback," then say GHT3: Incorrect time on the display". To send feedback, click this link.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Dan
