"There was a problem setting up Nest Mini"

I have four Google Nest Audio Speakers, two as a stereo pair and two others. I haven't had any problems with their connectivity or setting them up so I wanted to add two Google Nest Minis to the family and I can't get either of them to connect.

I get through the initial set up screens and then finally I hit:

Configuring Your Nest Mini
Hang tight it shouldn't be more than a few moments

I can't get past this section. The next screen is always

There was a problem setting up Nest Mini
For help resolving this issue, visit the Help Center.

Between the Help Center and the message boards, this is what I've tried so far:

Rebooting the devices.
Rebooting and unplugging for ten minutes.
Restarting the router.
Restarting the router and unplugging for ten minutes.
Restarting my phone.
Restarting the phone, restarting my router, and rebooting the devices.
Connecting my phone's wifi to the nest mini wifi (but this doesn't seem like it could ever work because then I open Google Home and it has no real connection so all of my devices are greyed out and I can't connect to anything at all).

After finishing the semi-setup, the devices do appear in my Google Home, but there are things I cannot do:

Rename them
Pair them
Add them to groups
Reboot them from the App

I did manage to get sound out of one of them from Spotify, but then it "broke" all my other connections and now I can only connect to my Google Nest Audio Pair and neither of the single speakers will connect, so I'll need to re-upload them after I get ride of the Minis.

It seems unlikely that I have two Minis that don't work, so what other tricks did I miss that I should be trying? With this much trouble during setup though, I almost want to just send them back. It seems a bad omen and that I'll continue having issues...

Hi OverpricedVodka,

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate all the detailed information.

Based on your previous answers, please follow these recommendations:

Step 1: Reboot the Wi-Fi router.  Confirm the following:

  1. Unplug the Wi-Fi router from the power source for 2 minutes.
  2. Ensure that the router's lights turn off completely when unplugged.
  3. After 2 minutes, plug the router back into its power source.
  4. Once router lights are on and the network name appears in Wi-Fi options, you should verify if your Nest Mini device has successfully connected to the network.

Step 2: Uninstall, then reinstall the Google Home app.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Tap your profile icon or initial.
  3. Tap Manage apps & devices and then Manage.
  4. Select Google Home. then Uninstall and try to set up the device again.

Step 3: Connect the Nest Mini (2nd gen) to a hostpot.

  • Connecting your Nest Mini directly to the hotspot will trigger the Google Home setup prompt in the app.
  1. On the mobile device, go to Settings and then Wi-Fi.
  2. Open the list of available Wi-Fi networks and look for an available network with the name GoogleHomeXXXX, where XXXX is a random number.
  3. If you successfully connect the Nest Mini's hotspot, go back to the Google Home app and set up again.

Please let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Byron
