My father is very old, lives alone, has lost most of the feeling in his fingers and can't see much detail, so even the big button TV remote control is getting beyond him.
He does not have a smartphone.
His TV is not internet connected. Although it's getting difficult, he can use the remote and doesn't want to learn a new one.
If I set up a Google TV Chromecast & Nest Mini smartspeaker for him, can he have the additional option of voice control of his viewing, if he wishes to use it?
I think he only really needs to be able to tell Assistant to:
switch the TV to the Chromecast input,
show/change Freeview channels,
change the TV volume,
and, crucially, tell it to
switch the TV back to it's familiar, default state so that unless he calls for it, Nest is not interfering with the TV in any way.
Having to use the TV remote for any of that rather defeats the purpose, which is why I'm asking here.
Secondary functions include
turn TV subtitles on and off,
maybe use iPlayer & ITV Hub,
turn the TV to standby.
Preferably he shouldn't need to use the Chromecast remote, for him this should be voice only.
His TV related needs are very basic. Everything else the Google system offers him that's unrelated to the TV is a bonus, but inconsequential.
Ideally I would want to do any administration remotely.
How practical is this, what isn't going to work, what have I missed?
thanks

Hi corvus,
Thanks for reaching out. I'm afraid those voice commands aren't supported to control your TV where the Chromecast with Google TV (4k or HD) is plugged into. You can check this support website article to see the things you can do when using a Google Assistant device on your TV with Chromecast.
Also, you can do a voice command to turn on/off the TV if the CEC is available and enabled on your father's TV. Learn more here.
Let me know if you still have questions and concerns otherwise, I'll be locking this thread after 24 hours.
Best,
Jennifer
