Arrive/Leave location starter cannot be created in Google Home

I set up a location-based routine some time ago that turned on exterior lights when I arrived home. I recently noticed that it was no longer working, and when I tried to review/edit the routine, I found that the Home app seems to be broken for this starter.

If I create a new routine and select the "When I arrive at or leave a location" starter, the interface seems broken:

  • "Arrive" shows as selected, and I can't choose "Leave"
  • The location box is present, but when I tap it, it flashes and will not let me select a location
  • The radius box actually allows input!
  • "Get notified..." switch cannot be toggled
  • "Between these times" flashes when tapped, but does not bring up a selection interface
  • Finally, the "x" at the top of the page flashes when tapped, but does not close the page

I have location permissions fully on for Home, so I don't think that's the issue. It just seems like the interface here is broken. 

For my routine that used to work, the interface behaved the same way, and I couldn't make any changes, so I deleted the routine. Now of course I can't create a new one.

Anyone else seeing this and/or have any suggestions? TIA

Same problem here. Hopefully someone has a solution. 

I think that "someone" has to be Google -- this just seems like the app is broken. grrrrrr

To gather further details and determine the optimal resolution, I would appreciate your assistance in answering the following questions:

  • When did the issue start?

  • Have you made any recent changes to the Home app settings before the issue occurred, for example, added a new home member, changed the address, or switched to a new phone?

  • What is the Home app version? 

  • What is the phone OS and version?

In the meantime, I suggest checking out this article: Change Home & Away Routines settings to verify that all the settings are set correctly.

The issue has been present since I set up my smart home around Sept 2024. The only changes I've made have been adding more smart home components. I MAY have switched phones in that time but I don't remember. I'm using ONE UI v6.1.1, android v14

 

I don't know what version my Google home is but I've check to ensure everything is up to date.

Update:
I decided to check the app again, and this issue seems to have been resolved. The interface is behaving normally. I was able to set up a new automation using the location starter, and I will have to test it to see if it works.

 

Also, just to be clear, when the issue was happening, it seemed to only be for the location starter. I tried creating other starters (not exhaustively) and they worked just fine. So it seems like something was broken and now it's fixed, although my Home app has not been updated recently.

Works for me now too. Looks like something got fixed.
