Google Home App: There has to be a better way (assigning rooms)

Somewhere along the way all devices listed in my Google Home app lost their room assignments so I've been spending a few minutes here and there reassigning them when I have a moment. This is a tedious and frustrating process. Unless I'm missing something, every device has to be configured individually. One. By. One.

  1. Tap and hold on device
  2. Tap the gear icon
  3. Wait 3 to 5 seconds
  4. Tap "Add to a home"
  5. Choose a home
  6. View summary, confirm choice
  7. Choose a room to assign the device
  8. Wait 8 to 10 seconds
  9. Tap "back" to return to the device page
  10. Tap "back" again to return to the list of deivces

Then repeat this process over and over for every device. Ten taps and about 20 to 25 seconds, assuming no mistaps or interruptions. At 50 devices, this would take me almost 20 minutes just to assign rooms for devices that are already set up, and most of that time is spent waiting on the app.

Here's a screen recording of it in action:

It took just over a minute to assign three devices. Like I said, there has to be a better way.

A few ideas:

  • Steps 1 and 2 can be shortened by putting an "edit" or gear icon right on the deivce in the device list.
  • Is the 3 second delay really necessary? I can zip around configuration pages in other apps, even cloud-based ones, without such a delay.
  • Steps 4, 5, 6, and 7 can be combined into one step.
    • Or, at the very least, remove step 6. Put the name of the house at the top of the rooms list. If the wrong house is accidentally selected, it can be changed later. This adds an extra tap with no real gain.
  • Again, is the 8 to 10 second delay necessary? See the point above about the 3 second delay.
  • If the edit screen is chosen directly from the device list, then send the user directly back to the device list saving another uneccessay tap.

OR

  • Just allow multi-selecting of devices.

That's all I got. Thank's for taking the time to read my post.
