Google Home mini not working with bluetooth speakers (connects but only clicking sounds)

Hardware:  Google Home mini

Recent Google update has broken the connection to my bluetooth speakers.  After a year of working fine I woke up to find that bluetooth speakers no longer play music from Google Home mini.  I can see the speakers in Home app, connect to the speakers but only sound I hear is a clicking sound.  To test if problem was the bluetooth speakers, I connected the Google Home mini to bluetooth headphones.  I hear the same clicking sound.

In an attempt to fix, I have:

- rebooted Google Home mini
- factory reset Google Home mini and reconnected to Home app

- unpaired and re-paired bluetooth speakers

- factory reset my bluetooth speakers

- deleted the paired bluetooth speakers from Home app, then cleared memory cache from Home app and repaired speakers.

Nothing seems to work.  I don't think it's the speakers because same problem occurs when trying to use bluetooth headphones.   I suspect I'll need to delete my Home location and reinstall my other 4 Google Home devices but that's a pain to do.  Any other suggestions?

Hi, @MBole

Thank you so much for posting in the community. I’m truly sorry your Google Home mini is not working with Bluetooth speakers. I’m happy to assist you and find a solution.

To assist you better, please provide the following information about your devices:

  • When did the inconvenience start?
  • Are you receiving any error messages?
  • Are there other Bluetooth devices turned on nearby?
  • Are there any high-voltage appliances or devices using 2.4 GHz nearby (e.g., TV, radio, microwave)?
  • Have these devices paired successfully in the past?
  • Is either device currently paired with another Bluetooth device?
  • Are both devices fully charged?
  • Is the speaker or display set up correctly and functioning properly?

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

  • Ensure the Bluetooth device is turned on and has sufficient power or battery.
  • Verify that the volume on both the Bluetooth device and the speaker or display is not muted.
  • Confirm that your Bluetooth device supports the required Bluetooth standard.
  • Identify and eliminate potential interference sources, such as other Bluetooth devices, high-voltage appliances, or 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks. If possible, keep both devices in the same room.
  • Test the speaker or display's ability to play audio from other media sources without the Bluetooth connection.
  • Check if the speaker or display has the latest firmware, and if the Google Home app has the latest updates.
  • Put your Bluetooth device into pairing mode (usually by holding down a pairing button or activating a specific setting). Then, enable Bluetooth on your Google Nest or Home device by saying, "Hey Google, turn on Bluetooth.

Feel free to ask any questions you might have along the way.

Best regards,

Ana.
