Help with existing matter enabled Google products

I have multiple matter enabled products that are also thread border routers.  I'm not sure how they work.  I'm also trying to use the devices in a smart things app where I have a matter enabled thread border router.  Should I be able to generate a matter qr code?  The only directions I find are to scan the qr code or input a code found on the packaging.  Well what about existing products that have been matter-enabled?  As a customer, the guidance on this has been woefully inadequate. Can someone please provide some guidance?
