Home / Away doesn't change when I leave home

In my Home app - the phone know im not home - but it do not change "My Home" to away. And therefore it won't change mode and won't start my Nest Cam.

When I return home - it change to "Home".

Under "Acticity" in the Home App, I can see ""Your phone left the home" at 05:02. But when I get to work  an hour and a half drive away. (and 100km away from home) "My Home" is still registered as "Home" and my cam is still off.

Hi JKristiansen,

These devices are designed to make life easier. However, they fall short of this goal sometimes and, create more problems for the end user. This sounds like an issue with the app settings/permissions and/or device configurations. It’s crucial for the app to accurately recognize your location to enable the appropriate settings and ensure your Nest Cam operates as intended. Here are some steps to troubleshoot this issue, including an important note about device configuration:

1. Check Location Services: Please ensure your phone’s location services are enabled and set to the highest accuracy setting(always allow). The Google Home app relies on your phone’s location to switch between “Home” and “Away” modes.

2. Review Home App Permissions: Make sure the Google Home app has the necessary permissions to access your phone’s location in the background. You can check this in your phone’s settings under ‘Apps’ or ‘Applications’.

3. Update App and Operating System: Ensure both your Google Home app and your smartphone’s operating system are updated to their latest versions. Outdated software can sometimes cause issues with location-based features.

4. Configure Devices Individually: It’s important to note that each device within the Google Home ecosystem may require individual configuration to respond to Home & Away Routines. Please check the settings for each of your devices, including your Nest Cam, to ensure they’re set to switch modes based on your home’s occupancy status.

5. Check Home & Away Routines: Verify that your Home & Away Routines are correctly set up in the Google Home app. Ensure that the “Start Home/Away Assist” feature is activated and correctly configured to use your phone’s location to determine if you’re home or away.

6. Restart Your Devices: Sometimes, a simple restart of your smartphone and any other device involved in your home automation can resolve unexpected issues.

7. Reinstall the Home App: If the above steps don’t resolve the issue, try uninstalling and then reinstalling the Google Home app. This can sometimes fix problems by clearing any corrupt data or settings.

8. Contact Support: If you’ve tried these steps and are still experiencing issues, it might be time to reach out to Google Support for more personalized assistance. There could be a more specific problem with your account or devices that they can help resolve.

I understand how important these devices are for security and peace of mind, especially with your circumstances requiring a long commute to work each day. Give these troubleshooting steps a shot when you have time and let me know how it goes.

Best of luck,

 Just Josh

I will try the things you listed - maby first in the weekend.. I will let you know how it goes.

I solved the problem by clearing the cache off the Google Home app. Since then, it has worked almost perfect.

Hi folks,

Interesting! It's good to know that clearing the Google Home app cache resolved the problem. For future reference, clearing the cache can help with temporary app issues by removing outdated data.

Regards,

Brandon.
