Add device, works with Google, search nest, select nest and I'm asked for username and password. Enter Google mail credentials and given error “If you’ve migrated your account or want to create a new one, sign in with Google". There is no option to sign in with Google.

what am I doing wrong please?

Here's another guess about what you're trying to do: If you have devices that are already installed in the Google Nest app, you should not have to add them to the Google Home app if you are logging into both the Google Nest app and the Google Home app with the same Google (gmail) account and password and are accessing the same Google Nest "home" in each app.

However, if you started using the Google Nest app before Aug. 19, 2019 and have never migrated your Nest Account to a Google Account, then you'll need to migrate your Nest Account to a Google Account (migrating to the same Google Account you're already using to log onto the Google Home app):

What exactly do you mean by "Trying to link Google home to nest"? Do you by any chance mean you are trying to link a Nest Hub (formerly called a Google Home) to a Nest Thermostat (often called just a "Nest")? If that's the case, you want to install them in the same Google Nest "home" in either the Google Nest app or the Google Home app, depending on the device.

The "Works with Google" option that comes up when installing or adding a device in the Google Nest app or Google Home app is used when installing or adding a non-Google device that is capable of working with the Google Home app, like 3rd party lights or smart plugs or a Tile device.

Thank you for replying!

We’re an Amazon household so all this Google thing is new to me. I’ll try and explain more clearly with more accurate lingo.

Yesterday we had a new heating system/boiler installed. It came with a Nest Learning Thermostat and a Nest Mini. The thermostat has “works with the Google Assistant” on the box and it coming with one of those little speakers, I hoped we would be able to bark commands at the heating system.

The engineer set up the thermostat and we can control the heating with the stainless steel ring on the thermostat itself.

he gave me the mini and told me to get registered. I used my existing googlemail.com email address and installed Google Home on my iPhone. I managed to add the new mini to the account so we were all good.

I tried to setup new devices in the Google Home app. Using the New Devices choice I found that it asked me to either scan a QR code or enter a 6 digit code. This Nest Learning Thermostat does not have a QR code. Reading up on this I find to be able to control the thermostat via an app on my iPhone I have to install the Nest app.

I installed the app and logged in telling it to login via Google. I successfully registered the thermostat after fetching a key from Nest.

I’m reading that the thermostat should appear in the Google Home app but it doesn’t.

Trying to add the device as described in my OP is as far as I’ve got.

I’m dumbfounded to be honest. If it says it works with the Google Assistant surely it shouldn’t be this difficult to set up.

Anyway, if you’ve got through all that and still engaged I thank you very very much!!!

@Peggie69

When you installed the Google Home app on your iPhone and then added the Nest Mini, you had to specify a Google Nest "home". When you start the Google Home app, the name of that "home" displays at the top of your screen.

When you installed the Google Nest app on your iPhone and then added the Thermostat, you had to specify a Google Nest "home". When you start the Google Nest app, the name of that "home" also displays at the top of your screen, under the word "Home" and above the temperature. Once you installed the Thermostat in the Google Nest app, it should automatically appear in the Google Home app.

Those two "homes" should be the same, and you should see your Nest Mini and Thermostat in that "home" in both apps. And you should be logging into both apps with the same Google (gmail) account and password.  If the "homes" are the same, you could try logging out of the Google Nest app (Settings | Account | Signout) but I can't find a way to log out of the Google Home app.

If they are in different homes, you could try selecting the Nest Mini in the Google Home app, select Settings | Device Information | Home and use the directions below to move your Nest Mini to the same "home" where your Thermostat is installed:

@MplsCustomer Thank you so much for your help. I checked all the above with no luck but the idea of having the same “homes” in both apps got me thinking.

Here’s the solution… I deleted the home from Google Home. Both Google Home and the Nest apps went back to initial set up. I created my new home in the Nest app (logged in via Google) Back in Google home it recognised the new home. While there I added the mini to the home and then went back to Nest and linked the thermostat. Unfortunately it was still not recognised in Google Home.

Tried again but this time left Google Home alone and created the new home in the Nest App and linked in the thermostat. Returning to Google Home I see the new home, selected it and there was the thermostat!!!!

Hurrah.

Many thanks again for your time and help.
Cheers!!!
