Onkyo TX RZ50 with Chromecast Built-In - Can't complete setup of "new device" in Google Home

I'm trying to add my Onkyo TX RZ50 receiver as a new Google Home device. It has Chromecast Built-in.

The Onkyo TX RZ50 is already connected to the same wifi network as my phone with Google Home.

Here's the process I'm taking that eventually results in an error message:

  1. I click on Add device in Google Home.
  2. I click on Google Nest or partner device.
  3. I click on Home at my physical address.
  4. Looking for Device, and Home app finds the device. "Would you like to set up this device?" I click on Yes
  5. Connecting to product....then it says Connected.
  6. Did you hear the sound?" I click Yes.
  7. Help improve?  I click Yes, I'm in.
  8. Where is this device. I click on "Living Room" under the section "My Rooms". Then click Next.
  9. Under Connect to Wifi, I click on my network name., then click Next.
  10. Use saved password? I click on OK.
  11. Connecting to Wifi.. Product is now connecting to wifi network name.
  12. Pop-up appears: Could not connect to your product. Make sure it is nearby and that you connect to it when prompted. I click on OK
  13. Use saved password? screen re-appears.

I go round and round in circles and never can get past that last pop-up. How do I fix this problem?

Instead of opting to use the saved password, try selecting your network and typing the password in again?

If that doesn't work, try these alternate setup steps:

  1. Force close the Google Home app.
    • Android: Swipe up from the bottom, hold, then let go. Swipe up on the Google Home app.
    • iPhone/iPad: Swipe up from the bottom, hold, then let go. Swipe up on the Google Home app. On older devices with a home button, double-click the Home button, then swipe up on the Google Home app.
  2. Open your phone or tablet's settings app.
  3. Open the list of available Wi-Fi networks.
  4. Look for and connect to an available network that is the setup network for your device.
  5. Once connected, re-open the Google Home app and follow the steps on screen.

I've tried and get the same result.

  1. Force close the Google Home app.

My phone doesn't do anything when I swipe up from the bottom. If the goal is to force close the Home app, I went into settings, app info, clicked on the Google Home app, then clicked on Force Stop.

  1. Open your phone or tablet's settings app.
  2. Open the list of available Wi-Fi networks.
  3. Look for and connect to an available network that is the setup network for your device.

My phone is already connected to the wifi network.

  1. Once connected, re-open the Google Home app and follow the steps on screen.

When I open the Google Home app, there are no steps to follow on the screen. It simply says "Home" with an "add favorites" in the middle, with Favorites, Devices, Automations, Activity, and Settings at the bottom.

If the Google Home app isn't giving you the setup screens, you cannot be connected to the right Wi-Fi network. Don't connect to your home Wi-Fi, the device you're trying to setup should be broadcasting it's own setup network, which will have a different name, it's that Wi-Fi network you want to connect your phone to.
