Presence Sense Not Retaining Selected Settings

Gussee23

My issue is with my Nest Learning Thermostat. When I go into the Nest app to check what determines if I'm home, I find it is not my phone despite selecting that option several times. When I go into the Home app, I find the same thing. I must have told the app at least three times in the past week to use my phone for my location and it refuses to retain the data.

I live alone so I really don't want things running in the house when I'm gone so this feature is important to me. I have a Samsung Galaxy S23 running Android 14 and One UI 6. I'm wondering if there is some sort of location bug with the newest software. I checked what devices are listed in my account and which ones contribute to location history and everything is above board. So that is not it.

I could understand issue in a household with multiple mobile devices but it is just me, one person, one phone. How hard is that?

@Gussee23

We don't use "presence sensing" or the "home/away" capability, but the post below says you can't use it in BOTH the Google Nest app AND the Google Home app:

"Your phone uses geofence to detect whether or not you're home, and it can only use it from either the Home app or the Nest app at any one time. When you enable geofence in one app, it automatically gets disabled in the other app."

Thank you! Now the question is which app should I use it in.

@Gussee23

I can't answer that. It probably depends on whether you have other Google Nest devices besides your thermostat.

Hi folks,

Thanks for chiming in, @MplsCustomer

@Gussee23, I'm sorry for the inconvenience you're experiencing with the Nest app and its location detection feature. You may use the Nest app to follow MplsCustomer's instructions. On the other hand, it's possible that there could be compatibility issues between the Nest app and your Samsung Galaxy S23 running Android 14 and One UI 6. Follow these:

  1. Ensure that the Nest app has the required permissions by going to Settings > Apps > Nest > Permissions and enabling the location permission.
  2. Go to Settings > Apps > Nest > Storage and tap on "Clear cache" and "Clear data." Clearing data will sign you out of the app, so log back in afterward to resolve potential glitches in the Nest app.
  3. Ensure the latest version of the Nest app is used and any potential software conflicts are resolved. It is recommended to uninstall the app from your phone and reinstall it from the Google Play Store.
  4. Keep your Samsung Galaxy S23 updated with the latest system and software updates, which often include bug fixes and compatibility improvements.

Let us know if that works.

Best,

Zoe

I only adjusted location/presence sense within the Google Home app but not in the Nest app (as suggested). This seems to have done the trick. Since my last post, both the Google Home App and Nest App have accurately discerned whether I am home or not and I have not had to redo the setting in the Home App.

Right. I went with the Home App. I don't have a large number of Nest devices.
