Hi Google Nest Community,

Our vision at Google Home has always been to create a home that takes care of the people inside it and the world around it. But a truly helpful home requires a rich ecosystem of devices and experiences that we can’t build alone. That's why we’ve been
building a platform that all device makers and developers can use to spur innovation in the home. And, as the smart home evolves, we must continue to refine our portfolio of devices to meet the needs of our customers like you.

As members of our community, we wanted to let you know about the changes that are happening:

We are no longer manufacturing new Nest Protect Smoke & CO alarms

Nest Protect, launched in 2013, redefined the home safety industry by introducing one of the first smart smoke and CO alarms. After a decade of protecting homes globally, we’re ready to pass the torch to our partners, enabling them to lead the future of smart home safety through continued innovation. As we stop production of Nest Protect, we’re partnering with First Alert, an established industry leader in home safety owned by Resideo. The new First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm will be available in the US and Canada soon and interconnects with existing Nest Protect devices. You’ll be able to control both using the Google Home app, providing a unified safety system. For example, if your Nest Protect in the hallway says, “Emergency, there’s smoke in the hallway,” your other Nest Protects and First Alert Smart Smoke & CO Alarm will also let you know what and where the danger is.

Nest Protect will continue to receive security updates and continue to work as they always have through their expiration dates. Devices will remain available at the Google Store and other retailers while supplies last.

We are ending sales of the Nest x Yale Lock

In 2018, the Nest x Yale Lock demonstrated the potential of smart locks for the home. Since then we've invested in building a great smart lock experience that works with top smart lock brands, so you can manage household access, edit passcodes, create guest profiles, receive lock notifications, and more all within the Home app.

As a follow up to the Nest x Yale lock, we’re partnering with Yale to develop the Yale Smart Lock with Matter, a new smart lock designed to complement Nest doorbells coming this summer. We will continue to sell our remaining inventory via the Google Store and retailers. The Nest x Yale Lock will also continue to be supported with security updates without interrupting lock functionality, and later this year passcode management and other features from the Nest App will arrive in the Google Home app for the first time.

We look forward to working with First Alert, Yale, and many others to continue the wave of innovation that Nest Protect and Nest x Yale locks ushered into our homes. We appreciate you staying with us as we make these adjustments to build a smarter and more helpful home than ever before.

If you have any questions or need assistance, our support team is here to help.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Does this mean that Google Nest is no longer building devices for the home?

Absolutely not. Last year, we launched our smartest and most beautiful thermostat yet, the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen), and the Google TV Streamer, a more premium device built for the new era of entertainment and smart home needs. Expect even more helpful home devices in the coming months and years. See the full range of Google Nest products.

Does this mean my Nest Protects will stop working?

No, your Nest Protect will continue to work as it always has. All smoke & CO alarms expire, and your Nest Protects will continue work until their expiration date.

What app do I need to manage my Nest Protects?

Until recently, Nest Protect was only available via the Nest app. Earlier this year, the Google Home app launched a new smoke & CO experience into Public Preview, which brings the Nest Protect to the Google Home app for the first time alongside your favorite devices from thousands of brands. The First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm will also work via the Google Home app.

How do I buy replacements for my expiring Nest Protects or extend the coverage of smoke and carbon monoxide detection in my home?

Nest Protect will continue to be sold as supplies last. Going forward in the US and Canada, we recommend the First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm as it provides a unified safety system with your existing Nest Protects.

Does the First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm have the same features as Nest Protect?

The First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm shares many key features that users have loved from Nest Protect. This includes remote silence, remote self-test, Heads-Up early warnings, voice alerts, notifications, history, and more. Importantly, both of these alarms operate as a single safety system with a shared experience in the Google Home app and local device-to-device interconnect, so any alarm in your home can voice what and where the emergency is.

Does this mean my Nest x Yale Lock will stop working?

No, the Nest x Yale Lock will continue to work as it always has.

What app do I need to manage my Nest x Yale Lock?

You can continue to manage your Nest x Yale Lock in either the Nest app or Google Home app. Later this year, passcode management and other features for Nest x Yale Lock will arrive in the Google Home app for the first time.

Does the Yale Smart Lock with Matter have the same features as the Nest x Yale Lock?

The Nest x Yale Lock and the new Yale Smart Lock with Matter both offer keyless entry, remote access from the app, scheduled guest passcodes, and convenient auto-lock functionality. The Yale Smart Lock with Matter also introduces additional features such as extended battery life, Matter and Thread technology, multiple unlocking methods (including using a physical key), and an enhanced design aesthetic that complements Google Home and Nest products.

Which smart locks are supported with the Google Home app?

Smart locks from all the top brands are available for use with the Google Home app such as Yale, Schlage, August, Level, Aqara, Eufy, and Kwikset. Just look for the “Works with Google Home” badge. For locks that support Matter, you can access additional features like editing passcodes, guest management, and more.
