Can I pigtail chime wires to enable visitors to press either old doorbell or Nest Hello button?

A few years ago I installed a Nest Hello video doorbell. This version was wired. At some point, my doorbell button stopped activating the chime and so I have been troubleshooting. I thought I had originally set it up - with success - so that either the existing doorbell button (integrated with a nice hardware fixture that I wanted to keep) or the Nest Hello video doorbell button could activate the chime. While troubleshooting, I noticed that I had pigtailed my existing chime wires so that they could each connect to the existing doorbell button contacts and the Nest Hello video doorbell contacts. Rechecking these connections and reassembling all resulted in the existing doorbell button successfully activating the chime but the Nest Hello video doorbell button was not activating the chime. I can't seem to find the guidance that originally led me to pigtail the chime wires, but it seems plausible that either button (switch) should be able to close the circuit and activate the chime. Of course, I can imagine that pressing the existing doorbell button might not activate the Nest Hello video doorbell notification and live interaction features. Does anybody know if there is a way to make both buttons work as I've described?
