Same problem here. I think it can’t “detect” if back metal plate is mounted. It there a way to fix it?
Чем закончилась история? Получилось решить проблему?

Finally I have returned both doorbells and bought Ring 2 Pro instead. Google hardware is better than Ring, but the software is miserable and buggy.
With second doorbel I've made further investigations:
1) went to my neighbor|
2) created a clean account from his iphone
3) the doorbell worked fine!
4) then I tried to add doorbell to my newly created google home account - but it had the same problem
From this perspective it seems to me that google have problem with chromecast for the live video. This problem is naughty! The only difference between cases 3 and 4 was the presense of old Nest doorbell within my account in my anonther home. But clean account also didn't helped me.
Bye bye google, Tony Farell made the original Nest, and it was spoiled and ruined by google.
