Doorbell draining external chime battery

NickHob1
Community Member

I have recently installed a Nest (battery) doorbell and connected to the original external chime.  Everything works fine, but it appears as though the doorbell is now taking its power from the external chime unit as I have to replace the batteries every couple of weeks.

Whilst it is not a problem to be using the chime batteries, it seems strange that it is draining 4 x type C batteries every two weeks.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks

@NickHob1

I have no idea what sort of doorbell chime you have, but if you wire the battery doorbell, it is expecting to be continuously trickle-charged via a compatible transformer (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9247132). So it's probably not surprising that it would draw down the batteries in what seems to be a battery-powered chime.

I've never seen any documentation on connecting a Google Nest doorbell of any kind to a battery-powered chime.

The Google Nest Help topic below states: "If you’ve connected your Nest Doorbell (battery) to your existing doorbell wiring, the wires don’t directly power the doorbell. Instead, the battery is trickle charged by the power that comes through the wires, and the doorbell runs off the battery charge."
